They should have a special coating on the coils to keep it from molding.

I had the same problem 3 times.
Find a new dealer that has good relations with MB.
Mine was done every time under warrenty, and MB knows about this problem.
We all need to contact MB and get them to fix the problem, every summer I have it done.
Its hot and humid here in St.Louis in the summer.

Quote: I was willing to pay $100 for the cabin filter, but they are charging $180 for cleaning up the A/C (whatever).. I was told that this (cleaning) needs to be done (recommended) every year.. not part any warranty since the car is already at 20k miles (they might do it under warranty if the car is less than 10k miles).. any advise where I can get this done? Wifey and kids complain of the sour smell everytime i start the A/C (a few seconds only though, then it goes away)..

update: bought the filter from the stealership ($56.xx) and replaced it myself. Sprayed 1/2 can of lysol and fan running for a period of time. Sour/stinky smell gone!

beats $280 (plus taxes).

Quote: I bought the NAPA air filter for $30 and it is exactly the same quality as the MB OEM filter, absolutely no difference.
Is that fact or opinion?

You could not tell a difference between the two. I would invite you to take your oem out and run down to NAPA and compare it. You will see that both are simple, VERY cheap, paper filters.

Post a picture for everyone too!

I actually use Wix filters by choice in some applications, IMO they're as good as or better than the OE Mahle/Mann/Hengst contingent. I took a look at yooker's link (thx for posting) and saw this on the Wix cabin filter - enough to convince me to give it a shot.

Carbon Filter
Wix is the only manufacturer to treat their Cabin Air Filters with EPA-approved BioShield® 75 technology. WIX Cabin Air Filters capture and eliminate odor-causing bacteria, fungi and algae to create a car interior that is virtually free of outside allergens.

Cabin air filters filter pollutants such as dust, soot and gas before it enters the car's interior; the added BioShield® 75 technology also filters out allergens with an invisible microbiostatic coating that becomes part of the filter fiber, polymerizing and standing up like microscopic spikes to help eliminate microbials.
