Using 87 on our cars!

I don't know how the other east coast members are managing to get by and find gas but i haven't had the best luck. Had to wait in line for an hour to find out they only had 87 regular. I felt horrible putting 87 but there was also a Bentley and a Maserati there to ease the pain. I almost maid it home but this thirsty ******* needed his drink. How bad is 87 for our cars?

Pretty bad, but if you only do it once it shouldn't be a problem. I know these cars can adjusting the timing and all that stuff.. Take it easy and don't do it again ! Some octane booster wouldn't hurt either.

The car will adjust for it, you will get a decrease in HP is the main thing. How bad eh I dont think anyone can answer it but short term occasional use is fine.

Now if you had a tune that was aggressive and for some reason couldn't adjust to a lower octane then you might have issues.

Didn't have a choice. A lot of gas stations are closed. There is a shortage of gas because of Hurricane Sandy.

I'm in the same boat... am I better rolling the dice and running it down to empty or just filling it at half a tank with the 87 on top of the 93?

Not sure, dont know too much about gas. The lines are pretty bad, had to wait about an hour and a half to move half a mile to the pump. They have cops all over the place and everything is so chaotic.

You will not damage your car if that is what you are asking. You will however end up with a performance decrease and your fuel efficiency will also be degraded.

All modern (last 5 or so years, probably longer) will pretty much work on any gas grade, and have built in protections to prevent damage to the engine. It is of course not recommended long term, but short term, there should be no issues.

Just don't floor it and you'll be fine. Octane boosters don't work, a bottle would get you boosted to 87.1 octane which is useless.

Just granny drive your c63 and you should be fine. I am glad I had gone to the gas station to fill up 2-5 gallon jugs of 93 and my car before the storm. Filling the car via gas jugs is no fun at all.

home the point
I get by because I stocked up on gas before the storm hit. Also I live by a metro station and can use the wife's car or the bike.

First part yes...second part, yes for most of what you can go buy at a Napa, but there is this http://torcoracefuel.net/pro-accelerator.html

Imma be doing that from now on. At the gas station, the cops weren't letting people use te jugs, only who had a car. In Yonkers, there was a $20 limit.

Don't use octane booster, It will just foul your plugs/injectors, and leave deposits on your valves/pistons. If all you can find is 87, then use it and take it easy. The ECU should adjust for it, but if you hear any ping or knock just back off. Worst case, take a bullet and drive your wifes minivan.

Reading all these threads about bad gas and how "not too serious" it is makes me depressed. Imagine picking up a brand new 2013 and realizing it idles a little rough.. only for the dealer to tell you it's "bad gas"

I was so insulted but I decided to keep my mouth shut!

I remember when I had my c300 and I was at a gas station near the Mercedes of manhattan and they had a few brand new AMG's and one SLS and SLR. The guys driving them were filling them up and they were all using 87 like it was nothing. I felt like an idiot using 93 on a c300.

So should I refill my car with 93 or wait until i run out of the 87?
