C63 Rear Wheel Well (Felt)

... the rear wheel wells are not supposed to have plastic protection like the front wells, correct? Just the felt lining?

FF. W212 E63 M156 non-pano 18" P2 ParkT NightV (gone but will be missed).
I always wonder how MB decides on picking the felt for the rear and plastic for the front.

also always wondered why the wheel walls on the front are different as well. one has groves while the other doesnt. maybe someone here knows... has to be a reason

I think the front needs to be plastic because of its shape, and being made from a mold.

My BMW is the same. Felt at the rear and plastic at the front.

It's because the plastic is a far better material to keep water out to protect the wiring around the front wheels whereas there's no wiring on the back and if water gets through the felt, there's no chance of doing any damage or causing any issues. Felt is also more likely to burn / heat up quickly than the plastic around the engine bay.
