I had a flat tire this morning (ran over a nail). The spare tire had a small tear and wouldn't hold air for long. Luckily I had only a mile to drive. Right as I pulled in to the drive way from the gas station the abs/esp light went off and said it malfunctioned. Could this be a sensor issue? Is this expensive to fix or could I just unplug and plug the battery when I replace the tire? I plan on plugging the tire tomorrow. Please advise.

I had this happen last winter on a snowy day, I had disabled the ESP for the fun of it & up popped that message, I pulled in to a lot & turned the car off & then restarted & all was ok. Canadian cars don't have TPMS's so it's not related to that, maybe the ABS sensor got mixed up with rotations?

As soon as I got the flat fixed (plugged) and I put it back on I heard a click and the light went off. It's like the car recognized the original tire that I had on before I used the flat spare tire. It must have been the sensor. I'm guessing it was affected by the flat spare tire. I'm sure if I had of kept on driving with that flat spare the sensor would have completely malfunctioned all together. Since this happened I have bought 4 new tires (Michelin) AS/3.

If you spin too much, e.g. In snow, the ESP gets confused and thinks the sensors inputs cannot be right and turns off.
Switching the car off and starting again/driving without spinning wheels usually fixes that.
Using a spare with different diameter can trigger the same confusion.
Both situations are self healing.

Steering Angle sensor
I had the ESP Malfunction error on my 2007 Mercedes E280 CDI. The dealer fixed it by changing the Steering angle sensor. The error light is gone now but the car is riding very hard.

eps and runflat inoperative
I have the same issue right now on my 2009 C300
Eps say see owners manual and run flat says inoperative and it will not turn off when i turn the car off and restart it
Ive read a lot about the steering angle sensor being the problem or maybe the (Signal Acquisition/Activation Module) both are fairly expensive
anybody know a website that has good prices on this stuff

Do try that before you replace the part.

Those lights came on for me after a failed alternator that also ate up my battery. The battery was on its last legs & all those lights popped up, ABS also stopped working immediately along with power steering

I managed to fix my problem.
- Pulled all the wheel speed sensors, cleaned them and the housing with brake cleaner and compressed air.
- Blew out all the built up break dust with compressed air around each rotor/hub.
- Unplugged the ESP Module and cleaned the pins with contact cleaner.

I'm having a rattling noise at the rear right side of my ML 350 initially it was showing Abs & Esp with the tire signal on my dash board I was told it was the wheel bearing and the wheel sensor I finally came to term with that and changed both but the rattling vibration still occurs with no signal on the dashboard. What do I do? I'm stuck
