I did a mountain drive with Ed & Dave (the two drivers) a week ago. Really nice guys. I am really surprised the record held since 2006.

It's just a lot of money to invest in something no one seems to care about. I did miami NYC in less than 15 hours. It was fun but really stressful watching for LEOs. I got pulled over doing '90' in Georgia but that's because I forgot to enable k bands in my valentine lol.
I've done Miami to NYC in 14 1/2 hours in a Honda Accord alone. The extra fuel tanks are overkill. Stopping for gas, food and bathroom breaks adds little time in the general scheme of a cross country trip. Looking out for smokeys is key as well as traffic avoidance. Timing is everything.
I'd like to do the cross country trip as well, but not in a Honda. The S6 might be a good choice. It's not about a record for me, just for personal achievement and then a week in California.
