K&N or Weistec Air Filters... charcoal delete?

OK.. so the stearlership told me to replace my air filters (and another $800k of various fluid replacements at 40k miles..ug). I figured its a good opportunity to change to a new airfilter set up?

I'm a newbie at this so bare with me... I did search but saw no comparison.

A. Is there any downside to the charcoal delete? This is a DD for me, not a track car.
B. Weistec (dry) or K&N (oiled)? Is oil a problem with the MAF sensors?

Thx.

I'd go with dry filters and there is no downside by removing charcoals it makes the airflow better

mass air-flow sensors can foul easily, but I think the problem has to do more with people over-oiling them after cleaning them. Cleaning a fouled maf sensor is super easy if it does become fouled though. I think a lot of people on these sites with "higher priced" cars are more apt to have someone else perfom work to them, and the dealers obviously make a "lot" of money servicing these cars, so I'm pushed to believe they're going to try to scare you out of modifacations, and also do what they can by not letting others besides themselves work on your cars.

Stay with dry. The MAF sensors on our C63 is highly sensitive, so the oiled filters may give you a CEL. However, each car responds differently to oiled filters...dry filters would be most safe.

Do not run an oiled filter in this car, the car already makes enough blow-by and the oil fromt eh K&N's will just mess up your MAF's

At the end of the day though, the stock filters and entire intake system appear to be a very good design, and also free flowing, if you did swap filters, I think the gains would be in your head at best. I'm pretty sure the dry paper filter elements probably do the best job "filtering" over any other style/design.

So would you recommend $175 for Weistec or just let the dealler replace with stock for $130 while they have it in the shop?

Thanks... I can always rely on good/fast advice from this forum.

aFe and Weistec filters look nearly identical. A lot of people have been running aFe for a very long time on these motors.

I'd go to autozone and buy a fram one that fits, and save the money for gas and tires, personally.

The stock OEM filters are disposable and aren't supposed to be reused. The AFE/Weistec filters can be reused. They just need to be shaken out and vacuumed. In the long run you'll save money. Plus, $130 for flimsy stock paper filters??

I've read mixed results on this forum. Some said they got check lights when using aftermarket fabric filters and/or deleting the charcoal ones.

As others have said the MAF is sensitive and the filters offer some flow straightening effect which make the flow more laminar and results in a better reading from the sensor. Generally when measuring any fluid flow you want at least 8-10 duct diameters of straight pipe before the sensor (and some after ideally), in the case of our cars it comes right out of the housing into the MAF. Some meters actually have built in straighteners as shown below (item 2)

They do... I got suspicious that they just stamped their name on it, but by looking closer, there are 32 pleats on the AFE and 39 on the Weistec (sounds like 7 more hp... )... so at least they are different.

Given the reuse factor, I'll go with one of these... thx all.

Maybe the Weistec to fill my want for a blower...

no the charcoal filters are simply there to collect and hold the fuel vapors from the combustion chamber and injectors when the car is shutoff. which then get sucked in once the car is started. So if you are that concerned with the environment than you probably wouldnt drive a gas guzzling amg. im sure filling a car up with gas emits more fuel vapor or just filling up the lawn mower etc...

i put weistec dry filters in and have had no problems. I ran k&n on my R32 and on an A4, not recommended at all. you think you'll be careful but these newer mafs are too touchy.

Hello and thank you for all the information.

I found two AFE for the G-WAGON G63 AMG - 1 being DRY and the other OIL. Called AFE directly (the manufacture) and they told me to use the OIL for better sound in the g63 AMG and they told me that THEY ARE BUILT differently to K&N and they will not CEL

Do you or anyone out there know if the AFE oil will actually increased INDUCTION SOUND? (I really do not care about HP gains), or Should I go for the Weistec M157/M278 High Flow? The Weistec is about 65 dollars more expensive, is it worth it?
All I want is to hear more of that whistle from the turbos...
Thank you
Luiz
