Downshifting
Just curious to know, when is it safe to downshift to 1st gear while rolling to a stop?

Whenever you want - Mercedes engineers would not allow it to downshift if doing so would over-rev the engine.

I'm more worried about the gearbox. I usually downshift to 1st gear at about 40km/h as I'm slowing down for the lights.

it wont go in if it would hurt anything. you can just hold down the shifter to the left and it'll drop to the lowest safe gear. I downshift all the time to stop at lights, brakes are going to last forever.

Some people think I'm crazy downshifting to first at 40km/h. They say "you wouldn't put a manual in 1st gear when your downshifting so why would I do it to an auto"
