I agree with you that it's rare but I wouldn't buy a m156 that's in the affected ranged. Look at me my SL63 is 4months old (used) and it out of warranty and I have had to replace the coolant twice already in the last month and a half.
All these engines can and will fail when they want to and they will sooner more so than later

You mentioned it being an easy process to swap the bolts. I did look into this when we bought the car and I found out about the potential issue. I was planning on swapping out with the updated bolt version (not paying APR 1k for some studs, nosir) one by one myself until I found that I would likely have to pull the cams out of the way to get to the head bolts and that I would need some cam phase locks to keep the cams in the proper spot while they are moved.
Is this true? If so, I'll just pay a shop to do the swap should this be the case.

Hello,
As many of you know, I have been providing Datacard info to many members interested in their build sheet, or to verify engine serial number.
I received a PM from a member today who indicates he has a "late 2010 C63". The Datacard for the VIN he provided shows a delivery date of 11/24/2010. The Datacard indicates the engine number is over 4,000 engines beyond serial number 156983 60 060658 where the new head bolts were employed.
Since we've believed that all 2010 and older, and some 2011s were in the affected range, I'm confused about how this one could be outside the range. I did a search to find out which digit in the VIN corresponds to the model year, but had no luck getting a clear answer.
Anyone have any thoughts on all of this?
Thanks,
Joe

Independent Mercedes shops in the Los Angeles area have quoted upwards of $5500 for a bolt change, and that's if there are no complications in removing them. Not exactly something I'd call cheap when the repair represents 20% of the car's value.

I did my bolt swap (one at a time) for ~500CAD. Which is cheap...
