Command System and Maps
How do you update the navigation maps, verify firmware revision for Command System, and update if necessary. I would prefer not to rely on the dealer for this.

This is an easy update procedure, just pop in the disc and let it do its thing. I believe i have a 2012 disc sitting around that i can give you if you dont already have up until this year. You just need to pay for shipping from Toronto, Canada

I updated mine a while ago (almost a year ago) as one member (CoolBDPhenom03) did a "group buy" for the Navigation update (25$). It took about 2 hours to read the 2 discs. Otherwise it's around 225$ for the DVDs from the dealer.
As for the system command i think this has to be done at the dealership I'm afraid since it's probably vin coded. But don't waste your time for that you will never have the same display as the facelift cars.
If you want to check your firmware go to the engineering menu: push and hold Hang up, 1 and $ on the command unit.

The cost of the map update is actually reasonable.. if you consider $225 reasonable. For once you are not getting screwed by the dealer, rather you get screwed by Navteq. They typically charge $200 for the map updates, no matter which brand of vehicle you have.

Hey Shades, mind if i ask where you got the disc? I asked my dealer (downtown MB) and they said they didn't have anything new. My nav doesn't have my street on it and it's less than 5 years old! In Markham.
