M156 valve lifter buckets issue ?
Hello
Are there any one who know when Mercedes changed the valve lifter buckets to the m159 design ? Also when did mercedes changed the camadjuster that failed in the begining ? Did Mercedes Benz changed the camshafts also after knowing the problem with noisy lifters? Do a 63 amg with pp 487hp have sls buckets or the regular buckets ? I do want to buy a 63 amg that dont have any design faults Or did Mercedes made serval Changes due to the eninge number 60658 and up Including buckets adjusters and headbolts ? Thanksful for any answer. |
i have checked the epc. Mercedes did replace the Adjusters and camshafts 4 times and the buckets one time.
But are there any way to see what's installed from factory truth Epc ? |
I'd play it safe and get a 2011 just for the possible headbolt issue.

Fur sure, But when did mercedes changed the valve buckets and camshafts ? also after Engine nr 60658 ? Are there any chance that AMG Germany can answer ? |
Which model year or engine codes received the revised buckets/lifters?
I'm looking around for C63 coupes 2012+ with performance pack (I am in the UK). Does anyone know if the 2012+ C63's received the upgraded buckets? I would rather get one with the upgraded buckets from the factory rather than spend ££££ to have the revised buckets installed. Thanks |
None did. All the engines are grenades waiting to happen. You should go buy a different car. Good luck.

I've spoken to a couple of tuners here in the UK regarding their personal experiences with customer cars and cam/follower wear...and they said even the later models with revised headbolts (of which my personal car has) are just as prone to failure as the earlier engines. They also said that they are yet to see an SLS in their workshops with the same failures....go figure. Mine's in the workshop now getting new cams n followers. |

Ironically....this is supposedly true.

https://mbworld.org/forums/c63-amg-w...t-numbers.html I'm still not put off. Looks like this bucket issue is the only major issue with this engine. Once sorted should be good for a long time? I'm no stranger to bad engine design in an otherwise great engines. My Audi S8 (D2) has nylon sliding shoes for variable cam chain adjusters. After 10 years in hot oil these nylon shoes break down and can snap suddenly losing chain tension and causing valves to meet pistons. The shoes are a real pain to replace. E39 M5 have Vanos problems that are expensive to fix too. |
Seen very very few guys on here with valve train issues. Way more head bolts popping.

What symptoms did you have of bad lifters and cams? 2012 and above should have the upgraded sls buckets and upgraded cams
I pulled the valve cover to fix a leak in September and noticed some light wear, so wanted to see if it had gotten worse. IMO the wear on the cams wasn't major, but the tell tale signs were in place and you could tell that within the next 10,000 miles I'd have had some blocky-looking cams. I haven't got pics of the buckets, but apparently one of them had a 'deep gouge' in it (I'm not sure how deep, deep is). http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...ps4lefbcqf.jpg Attachment 369377 Attachment 369378 Attachment 369379 Attachment 369380 Attachment 369381 Attachment 369382 Awful pics, I know... ^^^ this one is from when i pulled the valve cover: Attachment 369383 But yeah....they said the lifters were in worse shape than the cams and a long story cut short, I'll have my car back hopefullyyyyy......at the end of next week with some delicious Kleemann cams and SLS lifters  - I really hope the cams make a nice improvement in the power department  |
Did u keep the car? How is the m156 treating u lately?
Do u still have the m156? How is it after the work you did

The car ran nicely for years to-date with the updated lifters and cams tbh. The cams needed a solid tune to get the best out of them, which I achieved via HP Tuners. The motor has held up well though with hundreds of red line pulls and even up to 8000rpm at times. The M156 has its weak points like any other engine, but it also has many strong points unlike any other engine. It's just a pity that it ended up in so many heavy cars. |
Same issue here...
Hello everyone, newer member here.
Celicasaur - I'm currently going through the same situation with my 2013 P31, which I bought in December 2018. It's got 42k miles, heard the ticking noise, which went away after 15 minutes, then took it to MB. MB said the lifters are stuck and not spinning, which caused damage to the cam lobes. The full repair, including the adjusters, is roughly $11k. MB definitely did not install the SLS BS lifters in the more recent W204 models. Did you have a warranty? If so, was any of it covered? I'm currently going through the gyrations with my warranty company, Autopom (Royal). Freakin' headache. |
I have a brand new set of revised lifters for sale if anyone needs them. They are on the shelf and ready to go unlike the vendors that claim to stock them, but never do.

Yes
The SLS internals are apart of the p31 package ad well as the 507 and the BLK Series

^ And nothing from the cylinder head/valvetrain either. Mercedes was probably looking for a way to get rid of excess M159 cranks, rods (which appear to be exactly the same as the M156) & pistons, and figured they'd just throw them in the last car still using an M15X engine, give it a fancy name and jack up the price.

This has already been beat to death. Not true. Crank and pistons YES. Rods NO.

He's right though. There is a mechanic on YouTube from the Middle East who's rebuilt countless M156s, and he when into great detail on this. The only thing different is the pistons and the crank, which is basically the same crank as the standard M156, just lightened at the counterweights.

You can interpret internals how you choose.
This is an observation by a trusted tech with experience: reference posts #16 & #19 of https://mbworld.org/forums/c63-amg-w...ification.html |
So glad we have newbs rolling in to trust with virtually zero platform experience.
