The idea behind this is to capture fuel vapor so it does not escape to the atmosphere when the engine is shut off.
The correct term for this device is a hydrocarbon trap. Do not know about the ones used on the 6.2L, but most manufactures use a mineral called zeolites. This captures the fumes on when the engine is not running and then once started the fresh are traveling over the carbon trap pulls the vapor from the mineral and it goes through the engine and is burned.
This is the reason you will see very few aftermarket air intakes that are CARB exempted. To be able to get an aftermarket intake CARB exempted, the vehicle with the intake has to pass a "shed test". The big joke here is that brand new completely stock vehicles can't pass a "shed test".
I have done dyno tests on other vehicle with before and after tests removing the carbon trap and so far I have not seen any difference on the dyno. Can't wait to try it on the C63.
