Mobil 1 Formula M 5W-40 is on the 229.5 list.
I have used it. It really depends honestly. I find that come winter, 0W40 works a little better as it is slightly thinner at lower temps.
In Summer, I was using 5W40. Slightly thicker, but matters less because it is hot outside.
That was just me... at the same time, I will get whichever oil has the best deal
right now that is 0W40

This has already been discussed ad nauseum. The Mobil 1 0W40 has a better anti-wear additive package (and obviously cold viscosity) than the 5W40 Formula M, but produces higher emissions from the tailpipe and is thus not as environmentally or catalytic converter friendly. That's it.

Well, I guess it depends on how many of those 4,278 posts you have written and how many are on the topic of "oil for the M156"...

To answer the OP's question, IMO don't use a 229.3 oil. 229.5-approved oils are simply put, better oils, particularly as pertains to improved fuel economy and better protection against deposit formation and thermal degradation. These were requirements of the 229.5 vs 229.3.
