2009 C63
G'day everyone,
In trying to get some exact #s on curb weight, came across the following. Suffice to say, with the C63 at around 4,000 lb. and putting out the performance numbers it does (3.9, 12.3 @ 116), an AMG GT just over 3,400 with better torque number should prove very interesting. Oh, a Black Series too? No way. Shut the front door!!
Nor should we be surprise there is a connection with Porsche in development, as that goes back to the mid-80s where Porsche had a big part in the original AMG Hammer. Not to mention, both companies are based in Stuttgart. Anyway, here goes:
More Mercedes-Benz GT figures are coming out and the car is seemingly directly targeting the Porsche 911 Turbo. It is no coincidence that AMG enlisted the help of Markus Hofbauer who was in charge of the Porsche 991 chassis development. The GT is expect to bow in late next year and replace the SLS AMG which will end production. The car will have 493 horsepower from an M178/M179 4.0 liter twin turbo V8 powerplant mated to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission.
The curb weight is expected to be 3417 pounds. The power to weight ratio should place performance of the GT very close to the base Porsche 991 Turbo. A Black Series version will likely go head to head with the Turbo S or 991 GT2.
The M178/M179 4.0 liter V8 will be based on Mercedes four-cylinder architecture but doubled for twice the displacement and cylinder count. The advantage here is a lightweight motor that can be placed further back and lower in the chassis to achieve 48/52 weight distribution.
The car will come standard with 265/30 front rubber and 295/30 rear rubber. The width will be close to the SLS but it should be lower and also shorter by approximately 140mm.
The expected date for the official reveal is during the German Formula 1 Grand Prix next year. Can Mercedes take on the 911 Turbo? It sure looks like it.

At over 3400 pounds I am not a buyer.
If anyone is interested let me know you can have my allocation.

some calculations later and a 510 hp 3400lbs would net you a 0-60 in about 3.27 seconds.
so needless to say, would be a very very fun car to drive to say the least. And with say a modest bump to around 580 hp its a sub 3sec car to 60..(with the right grip that is)
So i am all for it..
for the sake of sanity, moderate wheelspin adds about .2 sec on average

I've read a few articles and it seemed to me that this was never meant to be an SLS replacement? Is this not being priced significantly lower than the outgoing SLS to compete with a 911? If so those power numbers are fine.

I have no idea why the move from turbo 4 2.0 to twin-turbo 8 4.0 only netted 100 HP, but I know it's temporary.

What's the power/torque on a new base 911?
They weigh a bit under 3200
It doesn't even have 300 lb ft
480 lb ft is almost 70% more in a car only <10% heavier
And they sell every 911 they can make

Unless the AMG GT is a LOT cheaper than I'm presuming, the competition is not the base 911 but the Turbo S. It has 516 ft-lbs, or 553 with overboost engaged.

A base 911 as normally optioned is 95k
Turbo close to 170k
The AMG Should be 10% lighter and have equivilent torque/wt and power/wt ratios and lower driveline losses
Speeds should be similar
Price should be between the 2

Did you really expect AMG to make a car thats half the price of the SLS that is faster than the SLS???
This car will be around the 100k mark, maybe base under that for marketing purpose and the S based around 119k. There were 2 911Turbo's at the porsche dealer when i dropped the wives car off that had a sticker price over 210K.. So i doubt its going after them.
Here is my guess. base 485hp (in reality 500) at 98k
S model with 510 hp (in reality 530) at 119K
then convertible models within 1.5 years
Then within 2 years a black series model that is 4wd with 580hp (in reality 600) at 146k

Case #1: If Audi Quattro can get the power & sound out of it's 4.0 to the degree it powers their RS models, with not the slightest "we are all insane" reputation that AMG engineers carry, are we saying AMG cannot - at least - replicate their numbers?? Surely you jest.
Case #2: Witness the AMG 5.5 twin-turbo. Started around in the low-mid 500s for hp & torque initially. Now, with some additional boost is topping out around 580 hp/665 lb. ft.............with some tunes falling in between.
Case #3: The highly underrated 4.4 twin-turbo from BMW M-Division (vs. the 5.5). Start at about 5:00 minutes for the scientific breakadown.
Long story short, AMG will do just fine by us. We just don't know for sure, but one thing they know for sure; they have reputation to uphold -- lucky for us.

Having driven the F-type R... It feels slow as hell. So NOT impressive. I wouldn't be surprised if Jag is overstating numbers. The AMG GT will be significantly faster
It's a little weird that the Jag F Type R Coupe comes out with 550HP out of the gates and for easily $50k cheaper.
Not the best of news for the C63 as well if this is a sign of the power to come, especially with the next CTS-V coming out with around 600HP
And YES.....to me....HP is everything....at that price.

Man have most of the people in this thread been living under a rock. AMG ALWAYS understates power. Look at the new CLA45 for which this motor is based... Rated at 355, but dynos are proving it's closer to 390hp stock.
The AMG GT will be heavily underrated, and I am sure once eurocharged & OEtuning get their hands on it you can easily get 550hp+ out of the motor so power should be the LEAST of anyone's concerns.
Also, 3400 lbs In a Mercedes is unbelievably impressive. I would buy one of these in a heartbeat... If I didn't already have an Aston Martin sitting in the driveway
