This past weekend I looked for the above oil, and came up empty handed at Auto Zone, O'Reily's Auto parts (sp?) and Walmart. These stores all carried 0W-40 but no 5W-40...
I finally located 5W-40 at Pep Boys which cost $12.95 or $3.00 more than 0W-40...
The oil I purchased was Mobil 1 5W-40 Emission System Protection (ESP) Formula M. Is this the correct oil for our AMGs?
The ESP and Formula M threw me off.
This container says the oil meets MB 229.1 standards...tks/Cheers,
Please be sure to look at the current 223.2 spec document. I was incorrect regarding the "fact" that 229.51 is the current spec. In reality, 229.5 is the current for all cars outside Western Europe. Per the 229.5, you're looking at 0W-40 and 5W-40 as the only choices. So, technically the new ESP formula is not approved.

In all 3 of the M156's i have owned, i have always used Mobil 1- 5W40 ESP Formula M
On the C63, the last oil change, i thought i would try the Mobil 1- 5W30 ESP Formula [NOT "M"]
Both are 229.51 Approved.
Anyhow, with the 5W40 over 10,000kms i would typically have to top up about 1L (a shade of 1 Quart) give or take.
With the 5W30, i had to top up about 2 Litres (Shade over 2 Quarts) . And over the 10,000kms that i had the 5W30 in, it was EASY EASY Motorway driving. 90% Motorway LITERALLY. I dare say, if it was city driving/ harder driving i would have topped of 3L (Just over 3 Quarts)
So today, i dropped the oil, and switched back to 5W40 ESP Formula M, and will be sticking with it.
Oil temps on both are consistently 102 Deg C (215F) Water always 92Deg (197F)
Under spirited driving Oil is 112 Deg C (233F)
Would like to get oil temps down, but dont know what oil would reduce oil temp thats MB Approved.
Ambient temp usually always 20-25 Deg C (68F-77F)

Also, for Aussie guys looking for ESP Formula M, GL Lubricants in Revesby sell it for $11 per quart.
I filled 10 Quarts EXACTLY (dropped the sump + cooler oil)
Dropped the oil while it was at about 80Deg C

Great info, but as a reminder, 5W-30 while on 229.5 is not approved for the M156.
any real benefit to using 5w40M over 0w40? I know there was a big debate in another thread...i recently topped off mine with 0w40
Imo no
The weight is the same at 212 f which is the operating point
The 0 is thinner at 32 f which helps at cold start-up
But in reality no difference as long as oil is changed per schedule and allowed to get hot before applying heavy loads
The dealer has put both in mine
The first few changes were 5w40
The last few 0w40
Note for m156, western europe and RoW
2) Restriction: Only SAE 0W-40 und SAE 5W-40 engine oils are allowed !
Not sure 'edict' applies, you can do what you want
Since they designed & built the engine they spec'ed that oil based on technical considerations
Why do people think they know more than the engineers who built the thing lol
The oil not only lubricates/cools the engine, it is used as the medium in its hydraulic control systems like the cam phasors (diaphram actuator), lifters ( oriface size), etc
