Technical Tire Wear Question
So, like many of us, I'm wearing down my last few mm of tire before mounting my replacement PSS.
1. Does the actual tire composition become less soft as you approach low levels? I have 1 to 2/16 left and, in dry weather, I feel a lot more loss of traction.
2. How low do you go, specifically on the rears? (I think state laws vary but mostly 2/16)

I think the compound hardens. I remember reading somewhere that as the tire heats and cools it releases sulfur which hardens the compound. Additionally, I'd imagine that the rubber below what the manufacturer would consider the tread is harder. As far as wear, i pretty much run mine bald. I dont drive it in the wet though.

Yes, the compound becomes hard and less pliable. That's why for tires you will not be using for a while, it's best to put them in sealed vinyl trash bags so they are in their environment as long as possible. I do that with each winter tires at the beginning of spring before I stacked them up in the garage.
