Chris Harris reviews the new C63 AMG

Amazing 21 minute review. Enjoy!

My opinion after watching this video:

* Sounds great despite the turbos - AMG has managed to pull this off (phew!)!
* MCT has been improved. Still not a DCT, but getting closer.
* Adjustable dampers are a welcome addition (finally!).
* The S gets a trick electronic diff. The standard car gets a mechanical diff. Finally a standard LSD!
* Interior - Big improvement overall (but iPad like screen is subjective - I don't like it).
* Exterior - Classy, but way too tame for me. This is a shame as Mercedes has enough cars that cater to that classy market (E, CLS, S). I wish they had made the C63 a lot more aggressive.

Overall impression - This is a monster in sheep's clothing. Powerful drivetrain, but the exterior styling doesn't exude that power.

Great video, Chris Harris is the best.

Those intercoolers are tiny and going to heat soak like hell. A lot of room for modding and improvement. That car will be an absolute beast once properly cooled and boosted.

Interior is amazing aside from that stupidly placed LCD. Exterior styling is terrible. I'm still glad I have the W204.

I agree with all the above points. But let's not ignore the stupid column shifter and the ugly sliding rear calipers. The brakes probably work fine, but I prefer the way my Brembos look.

Werd ^

And where do those squashed intercooler ducts go anyway? They are facing rearward? Does air enter through a duct and then travel forwards? Looks like a terrible design, probably necessary for the body/engine space restrictions. I'd be worried about modding this thing until you can get a big front-mount in there somehow. Cooling will again be an issue...

Conclusion:

W205 is a beast and will be faster than the W204
W204 is a more aggressive looking car overall

Can't wait to line up against one all decked out once tuners get a hold of them. Interested to see the outcome.

I don't think the cooling will be as much of an issue as some think. Tech has come a long way and you don't necessarily need giant intercoolers to keep a car cool. They have obviously spent a lot of time designing the layout and making sure the car is as efficient as possible with his little bit on going really fast and coming to a stand still.

I'm really curious to see if the tuners can fit bigger turbos in there or how much boost they can safely get from stock ones.

I got to examine a GT-S close-up at the track event out in Palm Springs in Dec. Those turbos are completely crammed in there. You could bore them out and fit a larger wheel for sure, but to get big power I'm pretty sure they would have to be relocated. I'm not sure how technically feasible that would be...

yeah i figured it would be pretty tight as is, and i wouldnt want to relocate since they are in that position for efficiency reasons.

Will be interesting for sure though

This and that.
Just can't get over the looks and how tame they are. It sucks cause that might have ruined the car for me.

+1

I saw it at a local motor show and was really disappointed with the looks. I can only hope they bring out a real improvement for the coupe.

The rest of the car seems damn fine though

Agree with most points on here.

Sounds greats. Interior (minus the column shifter and the stupid *** glued on iPad) is multiple steps above what we currently have, even in the FL models. Going to put down some great numbers out of the box.

Cons: Def. exterior styling. To say this is a sleeper is an understatement. Especially with the new C450 with a quad exhaust, it really is going to make you wonder what is what. Could have gone MUCH more aggressive with the styling to make it stand out, because let's face it, if we wanted to blend in and be fast there is the E, CLS, S etc AMGs out there. The C is suppossed to be in your face, come at me bro!

Going to have to see and test drive one in person before making a final verdict, but definitely enough differences to justify sticking with the current model and being happy with those differences.

The engine bay is cramped, will be a design feat to squeeze in aftermarket intercoolers. Im sure the stock turbo housings can be bored and upgraded.

Would love to see a W205 BS sedan. That would be frickin amazing.

Over-all im not sold on the exterior styling. it is a power house though, that block looks tough. Im sure its over built and detuned for the C63.

Lets see what our tuners do with the M177 after they get their hands on one.

The exterior just seems plain/normal and that stuck on ipad on the inside, and the dials remind me of a VW...It is still a great looking car but you can't overlook that power. It'll be interesting to see the tunes/power people will be making.

Ugly.. it is a mini S class. We have lost all uniqueness and identity in the new C class. Sure the interior might be a little nicer (minus that damn gigantic wart on the dash).

But the exterior can suck it... Performance wise, sure, it will ultimately be a monster after mods.. but I just cannot get past the looks.

This and that.
If I was buying another C63 at the moment, I'd get the BS or 507 of the current gen. But I would be going towards an AWD option when the time comes anyway.
