All 2010 and older, and some early 2011s are affected. Any car model can be affected. Based on engine serial number.

Hoping mine's not in that range.. Just got a low coolant warning light. What is the "max" level? It's only about 1.5" down from the black lid/where the two res halves meet…
Honestly think about two cups low.. Taking it in soon as the shop calls and has the tires on it..

I asked this question as well. I even posted pictures. I never got an answer. I think yours sounds ok. I never got a low coolant warning. I was just curious. Check out my previous post to see the pictures.

You can enter your VIN into this Russian website (http://www.auto-parts.spb.ru/cat/cats/m.mycat?cat=mb) select the "Карта данных" button on top right after putting in your VIN and hit the red button. This will tell you your engine number, if it is below 60658 you are in the affected range.
I know not everyone knows Rage2, but I chuckled when I read that.

Put about 200 miles on it since I topped it off. Seems to be stable, hasn't dropped at all, some "spirited" driving in there
Will monitor it the next few weeks, doesn't get driven a ton, and sleeps all winter. Have full warranty for another 4 years, not panicked.

My '09 SL63 full engine number is: 156981 60 029885. Could my engine be one of the affected engines?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Just went through this. Purchased a 2009 SL63 from a MB dealer on 09/11/2015 with only 9,995 miles on it, one owner. In less than 72 hours and not putting even 50 miles on the car, the low coolant light came on along with the check engine light and engine misfiring. I called MB roadside and had it towed back to the dealer. Fortunately I had a 30 day 1000 mile powertrain as I had suspected a blown head gasket. The dealer took it apart and told me that the head bolts had broken and told me there was a tsb for this problem. The dealer had called MB and got them to cover the repairs under goodwill 100%. They had it two weeks and I got the car back last weekend. Unfortunate that this happened, but I was very fortunate that it happened so soon and was able to get MB to pay for it. A month later and I may have been own my own!

Been reading this head bolt threads quite a bit over the past few days...
I just bought a 2007 (Production date 18-6-2006) ML63, less than 50k miles on it... Engine seems in good order and all servicing/work has been done at Mercedes since new....
I'm still a little confused as to the dates and engine numbers of those that are affected, just wondering if somebody would care to clarify for me pretty please...??
My engine number is 156980 60 000214
I'm assuming when people say those engines affected are below 60658, am I taking my engine number in this context as 60000214...????
I do have a coolant low warning but my coolant is actually low it seems, I checked it when car was cold...
Any information gratefully received...!! Thank you...

As concerned as anyone in the affected range. There's no conclusive data that shows which bolts will fail. So you either monitor or fix proactively.

From what I've read, I'm right in the 'hotspot' mileage as well...
Tricky one, I only paid equivalent of $7500 for the car and I only need to get 2 years out of it...
I actually bought a RR Sport Supercharged at the same time as well from a friend who is leaving the country, paid only $6800 equivalent for that as well...
So what do I do lol, both are in good shape, both, at this point need a little money spending on them, ML needs some bushes and engine mounts, brake discs soon and some coding for the engine ECU and the RR just has a slight air leak on one front corner, most likely an O ring or something equally as simple...
Much prefer driving the Merc, it's a better car hands down... However, Range Rover spares here in Qatar are very easy to come by used, Marc spares not so much...
And going to Main Dealer here is a no no...!!!
I expect to spend money on any car of that age but don't think the budget can stretch to pulling the heads off the Merc and it's associated parts & labour, even from my indy mechanic,,,
Which one to keep.............................................. ................

What should I do? Im glad I read this because I just started getting this message of "Low Coolant" last week and only drove twice since then for not even 10 miles. I'm outside of warranty and I have an 09 m156 so I'm sure I'm in the affected range.

Actually to be exact the message says “Check Coolant level” but when I check my coolant level is good

if yours is a 09 and hv not done headbolts, more than likely is initial headbolt symptoms or a crack on radiator. Prepare to spend some money or get the unlucky ones to do on their next purchase.

With the M271 engines, there are two rubber rings between the timing case and the crankcase wall that can fail and dump coolant into the sump. Whenever you get a "Check coolant" message, immediately check the oil to see if it shows any emulsification (yellow-brown-muddy). If so, do not start the engine again and have the problem looked into. It is a real pain to have these rings replaced since the front of the engine has to come off. A 5 dollar part requiring 100s of dollars worth of labor! Sad.

Mine was a cracked radiator. Ill be doing the headbolts anyway.
