Did they say what caused the engine to blow? I know you said the cel came on but what was the diagnosis of the failure?

I'm sure it's easier for them to swap the motor but I'd assume it could be rebuilt however the labor involved in that could be quite pricey and I'd assume it's cheaper for them to pay for half an engine

I'd get it running good enough to sell it to carmax for more than 5k haha

Car never spit a code or CEL. They didn't even tear the complete engine apart they looked at the cams and top end but simply told me that because they found metal shavings in the filter it would need a new motor. Level of service has been terrible at least properly diagnose the car issue right?

Sorry to hear about your issue. I'd of course wait to see what the indie says. I can't imagine the engine is so toasted that it couldn't be rebuilt for less. Stealers are notorious for just going the easier route, which more often than not means most expensive.

Yeah they should at least diagnose what's wrong surprised they agreed to half the cost without a tear down. I'd certainly get a second opinion from an indy shop or another dealer

Dealers don't rebuild engines, they replace them. They don't have the training nor tools to do it properly. It is in their best interest to replace the total package.

As others have said repeatedly, take it to a competent indie who has experience with the engine.

Best of luck.
