Dinan Statement - no gains in tunning NA cars
#2
yes and no.
if you quote some classical NA engine like BMW N52B30. you can hardly get any gains by tuning it. maybe 1-2% by adding high airflow filter. they are fine tuned NA engine by manufacturer already. but we are talking about a "detuned" M156 engine which was used since 2006 on S/SL/E class amg -all can deliver "basic" 520hp so from 457/487 to 5xxHp is nothing misterious

I agree that tuning a NA engine that has not undergone hardware mods is pointless unless the same engine if offered with different performance levels like the M156.
This is why I've not flashed the ECU in my 507. The performance gains per dollar spent are just not worth it to me.
I know many of the tunes offer adjusted throttle mapping and rev match shifting but max power output changes very little.
If I keep the car and make hardware mods I'd then have a tune done to match the mods.

The Magnuson guy should watch this video and chime in on Dinan's opinion of using a knock sensor.
This is a good video. A lot of BIG DSM tuners would only tune WOT and call it good. As customers in the know starting looking at their tunes they would see what was done and not be very happy.
I always charged twice as much as some other shops to do a complete tune. It takes a lot of time to do a full tune.

Agree, great video. I also can totally see that the future will be a complete ECU replacement to do a retune for new hardware and do it well. And that can only be done by a few who really have deep understanding of a certain make of cars - like Weistec, Brabus and Renntech in our case. The one-man shows with a laptop will be slowly displaced from the market. At least the quality/performance market.
