Some how, some way, something must have gotten stuck between the block of the engine and this pulley which caused the pulley to be shaven on the backside a good 5 mm or so. (5mm thinner than it's supposed to be)
Because this pulley was thinner, the part of the belt that was hanging off of that pulley on the backside tore off about a foot and a half while the car was on essentially acting as a weed wacker in my engine bay. That weed wacking didn't slice, but exposed my camshaft position sensor wires which shorted my ECU.
They were able to repair the harness, replace the ECU, but now it's throwing another code so they're thinking something is up with the oil temp sensor or AC compressor. Fun times.

Oh man, what a weird one. Sorry dude. Frequent pulley/belt inspection and/or replacement is starting to creep up towards the top of the maintenance list as these cars age. Nothing good happens down there. Are you going to put on billet pulleys while you’re in there replacing the belt? I would (change the tensioner too). Glad the problem was a relatively straightforward one to address - did you happen to see the tool they used to track down the short?

Wow.
Recently faced something similar. Was doing timing belt on the Subaru and saw a slice in the timing plastic cover. The a c belt jumped one groove because it was not OEM but Gatorback. As it was one groove off, it used that to slice through the timing cover. Underneath, the timing belt started to rub. .....

When I noticed this issue, I replaced all pulleys with OE (about two weeks ago), replaced the belt, engine mounts, and transmission mount thinking the mounts were shot and the belt must have rubbed on something while driving causing the belt to partially shred. Of course, I did the pulleys last being the easiest, and it wasn't until I pulled the old shaven pulley out that I realized the pulley was shaven at all and that this was the issue. At first glace in the engine bay, everything seemed mechanically solid. Anyways, after discovering that, I thought I had dodged a bullet given that I drove the car around for a day or so without issue. I have a feeling a piece of belt got stuck in the AC compressor and also knocked out either some wiring, or my oil temp sensor all together which is I wasn't getting oil temp on the dash, and my fans were running at 100% even at cold start idle.
Wow.

How common is it to have the belt grenade? I've only heard of a handful happening because of neglect for the most part.
Didn't a few people loose coolant hoses and PS reservoir components as well?

What caused it?
The belt being old?
The idler bearing being wobbly?
The tensioner of the belt being old and not having enough tension?
I have a new belt, all new idlers but didn't replace the tensioner yet.

Yeah, just read this thread and it’s like the other stories from the past couple of years (maybe one of the others was the alternator wires if I remember correctly). You’d think that MB would put a thin metal shield in front of the wiring harnesses in the belt path so that a broken belt can’t whip around and slice them open. I’m going to have a poke around one of these days and see if I can’t wrap them with something more durable. Might be worthwhile for someone to develop little metal shields around any wires in the path, because it’s unusual on any car for a broken belt to have such severe consequences.
No, read the post above. It was a pulley that was somehow shaved and became thinner causing the belt to partly hang off of the pulley. This broke a part of the belt and it started weed wacking the engine bay, per se.

I kind of preferred the gray but caught the post after decision for black was made so withheld comment but now that I see it on, I think it looks good.
With that said, I'm now picturing blacked out wheels as well

You move to Texas and still showing the CA 1 sticker?? You're brave!
As for the 507, I agree that it looks good on the car. I don't think many people are really saying it wouldn't look good. I think you've got a bigger philosophical question of whether adding the 507 "exclusive" decal to a non-507 car is "appropriate", whatever that means, almost in the same way as adding an "M" badge or tri-color to a Non-M car. Sure they look legit, because they are after all factory designs, but do they belong? Do you care what any of us enthusiasts think? Are you concerned with giving the impression, mistaken or not, that you're trying to pass a non-507 for a 507 by doing it? Personally, my last car was white and I was a fan of black/white/carbon...
