Wheel Stud Conversion and Sizing

Hi All,

So after a bit of research, it looks like we need 37mm shank bolts with a 10mm spacer and 39mm shank for 12mm spacers.

I cannot seem to find 39mm shank bolts and I don't really want to go down the route of shaving 40mm bolts down.

On my M3, I had studs and really liked the ease of use.

My question is this: what size shank size would we need for 10 or 12mm spacer?

Here are some examples of studs that could potentially work for our cars.

http://motorsporthardware.com/produc...onversion-kit/

Anyone know?

Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving!

Why not just grab the RB kit with open lugs?

why would you want to do a wheel stud conversion?

Makes it easier to mount wheels, don't have to align the holes, wheel won't fall off if you let go of it.

If you've had both you'd understand...

No offense to Racing Brake, but at Motorsport Hardware, you can buy the exact same thing for less than half the cost of this kit. Motorsport hardware is the absolute best of the best in the BMW community.

Code:
RB kit (80mm) = $105.80 for 2 wheels
MH kit (82mm) = $113.00 for 4 wheels
Edit: My bad the MH kit is for all 4 wheels.

Not only that, but in the pictures I've seen, 80MM studs look far to long for a 12 or 10mm spacer. I don't want them to stick out of be very visible.

80MM's seems to accept up to a 20 or 25mm spacer? So for a 10MM spacer, I'm thinking something around 40MM to match that of a 37mm shank bolt.

Right?

I'm looking into the motor sports hardware wheel studs as well. Not only are their prices are better, but they have different length options compared to rb's 80mm length, and also an option to buy black lug nuts. There is a 15% Black Friday sale too.

To help answer the op's question, motor sports hardware has short wheel stud for a no spacer setup, these ones are 44mm in length. Add 12mm worst case spacer, puts you at 56mm. They offer wheel studs in the 60mm range so I think that's the best bet. I have no experience with wheel studs, but that's what I think though.

Going to add another question to this thread. For aftermarket wheels with different offsets compared to oem, does that need to be taken into account?

MH has studs in 64mm which would be just a tad larger than what I would consider perfect.

I think 60mm would to small enough to hide most of the stud in the lug nut "barrel" of the wheel.

Cjoy - yes, I would think that with different offsets, you'd need different sizes.

The mounting face thickness shouldn't change at all.

Oh yes, your completely right. The offset would change at the barrel, not mounting surface. Good catch.

Just got off the phone with Motorsports hardware, they recommended going with either the 64mm silver stud or the 82mm black race stud when using spacers. The threads on the black 68mm stud do not go all the way to the tip so there isn't enough thread. The 64mm does, and the 82mm definitely has more threads.

If the 64mm came in black I would be all over them, will prolly go with the 82 just because of the color.

Awesome! BUT - I just want to be very clear here. Both the 64mm or 82mm mm studs can be used with 10 or 12 mm spacers correct?

They say the 82 mm is god for spacers up to 20 mm (I would say maybe 25, but no more, based on my experience with the 80mm RB studs). That means the 64 version does have very little room for spacers. No more than 5 mm.

Did you ever get your studs?

Also, for all others looking to grab these, they said the 64mm will work. The gentleman I spoke to said to mention that you want R13 ball seat nuts in the order notes and they'd include them.

Going to pull the trigger on these shortly and will report back with pics/reviews etc.

I have been told OEM wheels are R14 ball seat. I have no way to measure them but I believe they are R14. Maybe MBs with 12M lug bolts have a R13 ball seat.

Really? I've heard R13 is the confirmed answer to this.

I just looked up wheel locks for a 2012 C63 from McGard and they say R14. I have always heard heard C63 lug bolts are R14 Ball Seat.
