Wavetrac Diff Fitment
My Wavetrac diff arrived yesterday. It looks good.
I have ordered the bearings, seals and sealing compound from Mercedes Benz. My mechanic has not done a diff on a C63 before. Do I require shims to install the diff correctly into the housing. Is there any sort of preload setup, or pinion to crown gear lash setting that needs to be followed. Thanks. |
+1 to this thread, looking for some more clarity on install. My indy shop is currently tackling the install and mentioned something about a shim kit, but I also did not supply them with bearings so those needed to be ordered as well.

Does anyone have pictures of the diff with just the rear cover open?

There might be 1 or 2 other DIY but I remember seeing this one. |

Bearing preload and shims generally only apply to pinion gear replacement.
In live axle cars you do have a spacer/shim that goes on the carrier bearings. Based off Jason's pic above, that is not the case with these cars |
Thanks for the info guys.
I see in the DIY thread he mentions a factory backlash spec of between 0.10mm and 0.16mm. It also looks like most people who have fitted either the quaiffe or Wavetrac have been within this spec. Has anyone had the diff fall outside of this spec, and if so, are factory shims available. |
How much fluid do I need to refill the diff.
Do you guys prefer running the MB diff oil, or do you run the Motul Gear 300 or Motul Gear Competition? |
I don't track the car so I went with the Motul Gear 300 that Wavetrac recommends. You'll need 2 bottles. IIRC it's ~1.3qts to fill.

Bearings and seals have arrived at my MB dealer. Will collect tomorrow. Hopefully the local Motul agents have stock of the Motul Gear Competition oil.
Hopefully can then get the diff installed this week. |
Does anyone have the torque specs for the Crown Wheel bolts in the Diff.
|
I have looked online, but cannot find anything. We currently have the diff in pieces and want to bolt everything back together.
|
According to the DIY posted above, the factory backlash spec is between 0.10 and 0.16mm.
We opened up my stock diff, and we measured the backlash at 0.18. Just slightly above the upper limit. My car has 37000km (23000 miles) on it. Should I be concerned. Will see what the backlash is once I get the Wavetrac installed. Just need the torque specs. |
IIRC ring gear bolt torque spec was 80ft-lb.

You are the man.
Thanks so much. You should be able to find the install guide for either wavetrac or quaife. They fit in a few different pumpkins. |

I'm going off memory from 4yrs ago so don't take it as the definite spec. You also need blue loctite on the threads.

Got the diff installed today. The backlash with the Wavetrac is 0.16mm, which is just on the upper end of the recommended amount. But it's better than the 0.18mm backlash we measured on the stock diff.
We torqued the ring gear bolts to 80ft-lbs. After I had the diff all closed up, I received an email from Wavetrac stating that the torque is 75ft-lbs. I wasn't going to open the whole thing up again. I don't think 5ft-lbs will make a difference. Diff feels good and is nice and quiet. Will try drive the car some more this weekend to get a better feel for it. |

Is this all the parts I would need to install a WaveTrac LSD? Just wanted to find out for sure before ordering everything. - Thanks in advance! https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mbw...532a8ff9b7.png |
