Yeah i failed safety inspection for clear markers and clear bulbs. They said I needed amber reflectors. Amber bulbs were not good enough in VA. I drove back with the right ones, got inspected, and then drove home and swapped back to all clear/smoked.

It's different for every state, some more lenient that others. Luckily Kansas is super relaxed and doesn't care. It is also all about the wording and how it is written in the book.

You'll have better luck with a gas station vs the dealership just to get the car to pass inspection for something that silly. I had the same issue with a different car - dealership failed it for no reflectors (even though they light up amber). Took it to a gas station passed just fine.
You can buy bulbs that are silver coated, but light up amber as well.

On this subject, there are lots of replacements on line for pre facelift cars but for the 2013 not so many. Are they in fact interchangeable? Does model matter?

pre-facelift and facelift use the same sidemarker on the C63 so you need to buy the pre-facelift one for a facelift car - for the non C63 they did change on the FL car. I have a 2013 and bought pre FL lights and they work mint.

I thought the c63 one facelift had a little curve to it?

Illegal to run without amber side markers as well in CA, but usually officer's discretion whom are mostly car people and very understanding.
