I don't believe you need a backing plate with endless pads. They have a sort of rubbery material there.

Ah good to know. I'll put the anti squeaking stuff on and finish up.
Thanks!

Look closely and you'll noticed that that backing plate actually wraps around both sides of the pad, which makes the pad a couple mm wider. My first pad replacement didn't have this backing plate and was exactly the same width as the OEM pad. As a result it had more clearance on the ends and actually slammed back and forth a little bit every time you applied the brakes after changing between forward and reverse gears. There was an audible 'clunk' from each wheel when the brakes were applied. I really bothered me. I ended up putting the old backing plates onto the new pads and that completely cured the problem.

I'd suggest comparing the width of the new pads with the old ones before installing, and maybe even installing one and checking to see if it has room to move. If you find play, I'd look at putting the old backing plates onto the new pads.

I installed the pads last night without the shims. I bed the brakes in this morning and no squeak so far. Ill keep my eye on it the next couple of weeks.
I called Mercedes and they dont sell the shims separately, theyre built into the pads.
