FYI I just fixed mine today, leaking near the rear drivers side cam cover gasket. About a year ago I noticed a leak and found the rear bolts a bit loose (they are single use). I torqued them to spec and it seems to help for a while but started leaking again, so ordered everything and did it today, took about 3 hours not working at it too hard. found the gasket was a bit deformed in the back corners, replaced the gasket, spark plug hole gaskets and all the bolts, cost about 70 bucks in parts.

Pics of what the lower rear area gasket looked like, otherwise gasket was still soft and pliable seems to just be an install error by Stephan on my motor.

G'Day Fella's,

Thank You for that information/details and those images RoadKillRob, Very Much Appreciated.

Best Wishes to you, and I hope that has rectified the leak in your engine mate.

Regards

Hi guys, just tackled the same oil leak as you have described as above, Oil seeping from the Right Hand bank towards the fire wall. The previous owner/garage already tried a cheap fix before us with gasket sealer along the bottom edge of the cam cover. A bit of inspection in that area has found a hairline crack on the area that the oil was seeping through as well as flat spots on the original gasket. So it would be worth noting for anyone who has the same issue in future to check for cracks on the plastic cover 😁👍

What the odds that this is the same Stephan who assembled the engine in my 2014 Polar White 507 sedan Just discovered the same identical issue with mine at 55K miles on the driver side with quite a few loose cover bolts...

Interesting, mine I ended up doing again and found a crack in the cover also after it started leaking again in about 6 months.

Ah.. Different Stephan.. BTW, looks like I am still getting a little bit of oil coming thru bolt #11 after a new gasket. Do I need new bolts as well?

Guess all the Stephens were trained the same day though!

Bolts are single use technically and the insert on the bolt crushes a bit when torqued to set the proper pressure, so new bolts will likely fix your issue as long as the seal didn't roll or something else happen like a crack, the crack in mine was hard to find, resealed it twice before I really took a good look and putting a little pressure on the cover like I was trying to bend it made the crack stand out.

Not to make you paranoid, mine was cracked right near bolt #11 and those covers have been redesigned and have a new part number as cracking is a know issue, so inspect it well around that area.

Good info gents! I am gonna wait and see if I can source a pair of metal valve covers this week before taking it all part and doing it all over.

If you do get your hands on some, just note that the seals at the spark plug holes are different, I think the perimeter seal is the same, but the spark plug holes are a thicker green gasket instead of an orange one like the perimeter is made from, so look up the seal part numbers from a 2009 to get the right seals.

Ya they crack, if you are not careful (or let the dealer touch it) the holes for the coil packs get stripped and when I bought a replacement one which is a new part number, it looked like a taco it had so much curve in it. I ordered a second one and it was better but still not flat, service guys said they just bolt them down and don't worry about it, new one hasn't leaked, but not a big fan of the stresses on a plastic part when you have to take the curve out of it bolting it down - maybe it is designed that way, not sure but seems like a bad idea. You never hear of anyone with an older car dealing with cracked covers, just penny pinching and lasts long enough to get it off warranty mentality.

Thanks for the reminder.. I plan on ordering all new gaskets with spark plug o-rings as well. Looking at pics, the aluminum covers uses a different style gasket altogether. Question is same bolts for the aluminum covers as well?

There are 2 different part number for the bolts and one is 1mm longer than the other and they have different heads and once has the collar for the plastic covers (the part that starts with an A) the one the starts with an N I believe is for the aluminum covers and doesn't have the collar that fits in the larger hole in the plastic cover, it is just a bolt listed as HEXALOBULAR BOLT

Quick update.. Received the valve covers which came with the coil packs intact along with the bolts.. Picked up new gaskets from the dealer this evening with the green spark plug o-rings. Cover bolts ordered and valve covers going to the powder coater tomorrow. Will do a gunmetal finish on the covers to match the manifold. Thoughts on any other colors to consider?
