Is kind of ironic that he was talking about how bulletproof and reliable the car was...not that I'd ever wish catastrophic failure on anyone!

Yup. I was just talking with him and both agreed how it was cringe worthy to hear the cabin talk knowing the fate of the engine. Great guy!

so what exactly happened to his motor then. Apparently a stuck injector was remedied on a few posts on here with a few change out of parts nothing catastrophic. Car ran fine after fix no bent rods or damage.

also there where 4 different style injectors q4 being the newest version. Most stuck injectors happened to q1 and q2 versions on earlier cars. So not an issue with newer facelift cars mine is a 12 and I had q4 injectors.
