Gates brand belt tensioner. Good or bad?

I googled 1562000570 for the best price on a belt tensioner and came across gates brand ones. Gates is a high quality brand, but curious if anyone has used this tensioner as opposed to genuine MB? For about half the price (or $100 less) it seems like it's worth a try.

Yeah, like you said, Gates is highly regarded in the Supra/2JZ world. But that specific product I haven't heard anything about. I'd be interested to hear more.

The OEM tensioner for a C63 204 (& as far as I can tell all M156's) is made by Gates. When you pull the OEM off, you will see a Gates logo.
Additionally, the alternative "non-OEM" unit available from Dayco is also a re-boxed Gates unit, despite Gates & Dayco being competition. Bizarre.

When we buy from Febi, Continental etc we observe the same. Reboxed Gates just like the dealer part.

Hey thanks for the replies. So I WON'T be buying the MB branded part. Paying $100 extra for a pretty box hahah. Now I'm trying decide if I want to replace all the idler pulleys too. Go OEM on them or "generic"?

My bottom desk drawer is full of shattered OE AMG idler pulleys...if you go generic be sure to buy a reputable brand like INA/Litens
