strange, transmission in C won't upshift. at times

My 2012 c-63 in C occasionally will not up shift. If I bump the shifter left it will shift as in manual. I have to turn the car off and restart and it returns to normal I've had the car 18 months and it happens rarely-incidence has not increased over time. A minor annoyance but does it spell big trouble in the future ?. Any experience with this/input appreciated.

Could be your tranny adaptations. I'd try resetting it. There's a thread on how to do it.

I presume you already know that the car is designed to allow you to easily select a "max" gear and prevent it from shifting up beyond that gear . . .

this could be the answer for the OP...

i could be wrong since this is just from memory...

but if you're driving in C or S mode and you happen to tap on the downshift paddle or move the shifter to the left, then you car dash should say something like D1, D2, D3, etc... this means you're still in automatic mode but you just changed the top gear your car will shift to... if it says D4 on your dash, then your car will not shift beyond 4th gear unless you hit redline... if you're in this particular mode and you want to get out, just keep tapping on upshift until your dash shows the C or S again... or you can also just hold onto the upshift and it will quickly get out of it... or you can press the C,S,M button a few times...

if you want to really shift manually, then you should stay in M mode... but you would have to up shift each time... M mode will NOT automatically shift you to the next higher gear when you hit redline...
