Removing rear bumper to install diffuser, crazy?

Sup guys,

I recently purchased a rear diffuser from JL Motoring.

I was very disappointed with the design. The diffuser itself is very nice, carbon fiber is inline, clear coat finish is great, but the inside tabs were pretty much just straight lines of metal. Not even tabs. I successfully took off the stock diffuser, which is at most 2 minutes of your time by the way. Then it was time to install the carbon fiber, big fin diffuser. As I aligned it with the bumper I realized... "Well, how the heck is this thing supposed to stay on?".

I emailed the Vendor asking if this was a factory mistake or what. Of course, they responded that this was intentionally designed this way. I was told to slot the metals through the bumper openings (where the original tabs were slotted) and bend them upwards from the inside. I wasn't surprised with the response since that what I thought of doing as well, if worst came to worse.

The problem however is this, when I align the diffuser, I can only reach certain tabs. The tabs that are in the middle are impossible to get to.

A) Did anyone here install this diffuser?
How were you guys able to reach the tabs to bend them upwards, especially the middle ones?

B) Is it crazy to remove the bumper for this?

C) Is there a clear guide on how to properly remove the bumper? I have a pretty good idea.Closest to guide I found is this: https://mbworld.org/forums/c63-amg-w...guide-pls.html

Another unhappy camper,

I took the bumper off to install both my diffusers. It's the only way IMO to get it perfect. That way you can silicone then clamp the hell out of it to ensure that it fits right and won't go anywhere. I just don't see a good way to do it while on the car - too difficult to tape/clamp in place, and I only like to do things once. Same for the front lip and rockers.

It's the response I was looking for. I'll MOST likely take off the bumper.

Any other tips in taking off the bumper. you had replied in the thread I posted as well.

Yup it's easy. The second video above isn't accurate though if I'm remembering correctly. I thought that the bumper just slid out backwards once you had the wheelwell corner screws out, and there are no stoplight screws to take out either, but I could be wrong. It's pretty obvious once you start taking it apart, where there might be screws still holding it on - I think they're all under the trim on the inside of the trunk. Just make sure to watch the proximity sensors secured to the inside of the rear bumper if you have them. The wires are very short, so you need to unclip them by getting your hand in there first before removing the bumper.

Don't get discouraged, none of them fit perfectly from what I've seen

I fitted the Boca Type1 carbon race diffuser with the rear bumper still attached but it came with the exact same tabs as the oem diffuser and fitment was just as good aswell. Hope the fitment goes too plan buddy.

I have the same diffuser. It is designed that way for a reason, in fact, the metal tabs are the UPDATED design. Before it was plastic tabs that did not fit and would break. Those aluminum tabs are so when fitting and mounting, there is some give, and you lock the diffuser in by bending the tab. Trust me, you want those, not plastic static tabs.

I did not remove my bumper. It's meant so you don't have to. Just careful when removing old diffuser then place in new diffuser and bend tabs. It will stay securely. Just extended bolts to go from body to hold at 2 points in under diffuser tab area....you might have to drill holes in those tabs. I had to....

Yeah. I removed the bumper and bent those tabs down. Otherwise there is a huge gap.

i dont see how you installed the diffuser properly without removing the bumper. There is just no way to bend the tabs once you have the diffuser on. There is zero space underneath. Im in the middle of removing my bumper as we speak.

Im stuck so i came back to watch the videos i posted. Im not sure if im supposed to remove all 3 10mm bolts on the bottom or not.

It is absolutely a PIA but you have to stick your fingers inbtween the frame and push the bumper out as you bend the tabs down. It was rough on my hands but thats because I didn't remove my bumper. Once you are in there with a lot of force, bend the tabs down.

Removing the bumper is easiest and because you are almost there, just go that route. There is a torx on each side of the corners. You wont need those because the diffuser as longer tabs that stabilize it.
After removing the old diffuser I thought I need the two bridge brackets and took out the rivets but don't bother, you wont need those...

Take some pics if you can...

I did mine on the car with the use of a ramp
when I first lined it up it was to small well looked to small
i started at one end then worked my way across
I missed one tab and it looked terrible so I was about to remove it and found I missed the one tab so I re did it with all the tabs and fits fine
there was no need to silicon anything
I can't upload a pic for some reason it just won't display

I meant to follow up here but just ran out of time.

I am very glad that I took the bumper off. There is just no way to properly install this without removing it, I don't care what anyone says. If you want a proper install, flush look, REMOVE your BUMPER.

It takes literally 15 minutes to remove the bumper. In total, it's total of 4 bolts, 4 screws, and 4? tabs.

Now if you have an expensive diffuser with OEM tabs etc... this of course does not apply to you, you lucky *******.

This is the diffuser I installed. Notice the "tabs". Well once you insert these, you're supposed to bend them from the inside. yet, there is zero room to work with, hence, REMOVE your bumper.
