Broken cam shaft on install help

Hey guys so I was getting my hydraulic lifters replaced along with other things and the mechanic warned me that the cams on the M156 were sensitive and prone to break at times.

so we continued with the work and then he tells me that the intake cam on the right of the motor has broken in half. Now I didn't want to judge the guys integrity because I had done my research and confirmed that he was a reputable mechanic especially with European and exotics.

I phoned up a few other workshops with experience working on m156 motors and none of them had ever come across this issue and put it down to mechanics incorrect installation method.

I just want some feedback from anyone that has heard of this happening as I am now faced with another $1500 that I wasn't expecting.

any advice would be much appreciated guys. Thanks Perfectly good cam shaft destroyed

Cams are fairly brittle as they are hardened but normally you have to drop them to break them. Had he started working on the car before the warning I would be suspicious if he had started on the car then warned you then waited and told you it had broken.

Thanks for the prompt response, no he definitely warned me before he took the cams out so I can't say he's trying to pull something on me, I was just questioning his method as I can't seem to find any other reports of them breaking.

Been around this platform for 6 years and this is the first I've heard of M156 cams being sensitive and prone to break at times.

Thanks, so sounds like he's doing something wrong as this isn't the first cam shaft he's broken and didn't want to foot the bill for something hat would potentially be worth more than his profit on the whole job

There's quite a bit of tension on the cams at 40° so you need to unbolt the caps slowly and evenly.

The only way I can see this happening is if he just zipps the caps off without following the sequence properly.

I'd put my money on that if he didn't drop it.

I hate being the nice guy, but if I get enough feedback from the likes of yourself and the handful of other mechanics I spoke to I have no choice but to pin it on him. At the very least go halves on the new shaft. Fml

Thats sad to hear man. As mentioned above that is a whole load of bull I believe. Well is there nobody local who can make you another one identical to that of yours broken for a cheaper price but using billet camshafts? There may be members selling a set on here so you can buy theirs and get it polished by an engineer.

Thanks khan it truly is heart breaking I bought this car for the Mrs in November last year to accommodate our growing family and have honestly not enjoyed for more than 2 months in total between repairs.

don't really know of anyone locally but happy to take on any suggestions or offers that the guys might have.
