Quick question please help
my car is in the shop with a new diff on order. Was noisy and ended up being bad. It's being covered by aftermarket warranty. My question is this. My car came with factory lsd. How do I know I'm getting the same diff and not the open one. The gears can't just be ordered the whole thing has to be shipped. My mechanic says the dif is linked to my vin. Is this true. Will my vin tell them that it's an lsd and not open diff??? Thanks.

It's likely just the ring an pinion getting replaced. The LSD will just get the new ring and everything will be re-assembled with all new parts.

I think he means the whole pumpkin is going to be replaced . OP I would make sure to grab the part number off the new diff you are getting and run it by Mercedes and confirm it's the lsd one or just do a Google search .

yea Ill try that. Our diffs the internals cannot be replaced. They don't sell individual parts. The whole unit is getting replaced. 5k cost which is nuts cause you can get aftermarket way cheaper.

A 3rd party can't obtain them but MB does, well at least, did have access to them.

Yes individual parts can be replaced, I have replaced every bearing which is probably where the noise is coming from.
To get the parts, research is required on the end the bearings are the same as in a dodge charger, challenger and Chrysler 300. they use the same diff from the Daimler Chrysler days. The rebuild did cost me $250 in parts.

If you get a new diff make sure you take the old one and sell it.
