Ceramic Wheel Bearings

Does anyone have experience with these? My buddy had a customer who picked up 3mph and 3tenths in the 1/4 by changing to ceramic (on a 9sec 150mph trap car). Says that the car just glides so much more smoothly and swears by them except for the cost. I’m sure that there’s not an off the shelf solution, but I wonder if our hub uses a standard size that can be pressed out/in or not. Does anyone know?

Edit: Finding some interesting articles like this http://www.dragzine.com/tech-stories...echnology-101/

thats very interesting. I would think you could just measure the stock one and see if you can find a similar sized ceramic replacement.

This guy seems to be popular in the DSM and GTR crowd. Uses high-grade USA components. http://www.curtbrownracing.com/ceramic-bearings.html

He does custom work. I’m going to give him a call next week and start figuring out what the cost would be to convert 4 new OE hubs to ceramic.

Built 2008 G55 & one big 80 Series LandCruiser !
I'd be in for a BG if that's an option..... I have a friend who tracks his GTR who runs a set and he said it's the best bnag for the buck mod so far.... and he's spent well over the cost of my 507 just on mods....

Race track perhaps, but you won't notice any difference with our cars. Road applications, No. I have seen them break and if you don't get the best quality ones, the races can rust and have seen weather related issues. Not many, but it can happen. The pros is they roll better, lighter (like that makes any difference at all with our cars) and are able to run with low lube at times. If you need every split second on the track, I'd still say no with the weight of our cars.

I put ceramic bearings in my road bike wheels 2yrs ago and the difference was shocking - night and day. The problem with cars is how to deal with the increased weight and durability concerns (shock, potholes etc)

What hubs were you using? I run Campy Record hubs and they use a bearing retainer with high-quality steel ***** as opposed to a sealed cartridge bearing. The spin forever after a rebuild.

Ceramic bearings should be rounder and harder than steel bearings. That should bode well for durability.

White Industries H1 hubs with Boca Bearings hybrid ceramics. Reynolds 46mm carbon clincher rims with CX-Ray blades. Wheels spin forever.

Yes, ceramics are smoother and harder. But don’t deal with shocks as well as steel.
