Supercharger bypass issues

I recently installed an ESS Supercharger and I am having issues with the bypass function.

When I floor down the accelerator while the engine is doing 3000 or more RPM the bypass would not close and therefore no forced air is added to the engine. I can definitely tell there is a lack of power.

I floored the accelerator at 2600 RPM or less you feel the car quickly taking off.

Do you guys with supercharger have any advice on how to resolve this issue?
  1. I already adjusted the position of the actuator so it has a little of pre-tension on the open position. No benefits at all from this adjustment.
  2. I also tried cutting the vacuum from the engine to the actuator after 3000 RPM using a 3 way valve (leaving the actuator free flowing air to atmosphere) and sometimes the bypass will shut off with a considerable delay and power is reestablished. I believe that the pressure of air produced after the rotors flowing trough the bypass butterfly is higher than the force from actuator spring preventing it from closing.

Any advice will be definitely appreciated,

Plumb the bypass valve to the positive or boost side of the supercharger. The same place you would put a boost gauge. I fought the same issue with my weistec unit and this solved the issue.

Thanks for the advice. I will need to tap the cover of my supercharger then. I couldn't find a pressurized port on my ESS supercharger.

I feel pretty certain that you should have a port already. It may be an Allen plug on the rear base of the blower. Ask ESS if there is a port for a boost gauge. The weistec unit portis located at the base of the rear of the intake on the drivers side.

I just removed the top cover, drilled and installed a port on the positive side of the supercharger. Will test it tomorrow.

Make sure the port is below the bypass valve. A port in the upper rotor housing will not be on the pressure side. Additionally, you can buy different bypass valves on the whipple website. Some have different spring tensions. Good luck with it. Let us know how it works out for you.

It did work.
Thanks for the advise!

It close a bit earlier but is way better than not closing at all at high RPMs.

Update:
  1. Issue was still present at some points when using the positive side of the supercharger to control the bypass actuator.
  2. Driveability and Fuel consumption where not optimum.

So I got in contact with Levon at SmoothBoost and he provided me with an electronic actuator for the bypass.
  1. Quality of the product is superb
  2. Driveability is now like OEM but with the benefit of the supercharger added power.
  3. Not enough miles to comment on fuel consumption

If you are having the sames issues, and the supercharger On/Off power is bothering you; this is an excellent alternative. I believe this should be the way to control bypass operation of the modern supercharger systems.

Good Luck

Thanks for the info. How much was the unit? Do you have a link or any more info on it?

Thanks, Mike

Have you talked to ESS? I would do that before you do any modifications. There is a vacuum motor on the rear of the unit that opens and closes the valve and if it is working properly and you have the correct hose plugged into it, you should have no problems. Mine seems to function correctly and has a smooth pull on the dyno with full power. Since the units are all manufactured the same it seems like none should need modification if all the parts are assembled and functioning properly.

I reached out to ESS and the recommended to verify for vacuum leaks and the bypass arm not binding which turned out OK. I even changed the actuator. My major issue was the bypass not closing when I floored the car above 3000 RPM.

Jaime, how much was the SmoothBoost electronic actuator? Do you have a link or any more info on it?
