Catch Can Help

Greetings all! Finished installing a VRP Catch Can on my M156 powered R63 today. After a short shake down drive, 25 miles or so, returned home to find some oil spray on the radiator, underside of hood, and cam shaft covers. Appears to have sprayed from the dip stick. The lines are about 48-52” each. I checked the catch can after the drive and it was bone dry.

Waiting for the engine to cool now before taking a look, but wanted to see if anyone had some thoughts.

Thanks!!

Definitely blocked up at some point in the plumbing.

Got back into the engine bay and the lines were in the correct out/in. I suspect, given the tightness within the R63 engine bay, that the feed line for the inlet was turned to sharply and there was insufficient flow. Removed the lines and can, reconnected the OEM, and will have a re-think on placement within the engine bay. Wish there was more room!

Re-installed today with the can being installed behind the intake split and lines trimmed to 10-12”. No kinks or abnormal bends; free flowing hose 1/2” hose. All fittings tight and secure.

Same problem. Oil being blown out of the dip stick. At this point I suspect the lines are to small to flow sufficient air out of the crank case resulting in the pressure having to go somewhere....like the dipstick.

Any thoughts from the more experienced M156 gurus??

“In” towards the front, “out” towards the rear.

You've still got a pinched line or a blockage somewhere. Does air flow thru the catch can if you blow on the inlet hose?

You're lucky it's blowing out the dip stick and not thru a front or rear main seal, don't drive it until you get it figured out.

Yep; you can blow in the “in” side and it comes out freely on the “out” side (vice versa as well). Already reverted back to the OEM setup to prevent any damage while troubleshooting this.

I just emptied mine that was installed a couple months ago for the first time at the reccomended 3000 miles. How much oil should I expect to see? There was like maybe around a table spoon. I didn't really measure it.

When I opened the can’s drain spout I got nothing but when I took the catch can out of the car and tipped it I got maybe a quarter cup, in approximately a couple months worth of driving.

to the OP did you swap out the old PCV too? Maybe a bad valve?

the valve is about 20k miles old; reasonably new. I’ve been wondering the same since posting this. No issues with the OEM setup though.

I am not sure if this is related or not but here goes, do you have the updated/ revised oil dipstick?
I believe the ML63 & R63 share most parts. My ML used to push the dipstick out and blow oil all over under WOT. The M156 engine in my car has a large breather tube (NOT A PCV!). The updated dipstick sits in place and doesn't move at all.

Good luck.

Great point! I’ve looked for A 156 010 05 72 and have yet to find one in stock. I believe that’s the updated Part Number. Anyone have a solution to source a dipstick!?

I called two dealers a few years ago and they both had the updated dipstick in stock. IIRC I paid about $12.
