M3, ugh
Facelift W204 reliability

Dear MBWorld

I am looking at a 2012 W204 C63 with a few miles on odometer (175.000 km).

I have tried to do my research, but it seems like i can’t find answers.
  • Does the facelifted version of the C63 have any major design flaws of the engine like the older model?
  • Did they change the cams/lifters or whatever caused the issues?
  • Have any of you had major engine issues with a facelifted model?

Thanks for your time and help.

Best regards from Denmark

Other than headbolts all m156 have the same issues.
Yes there have been revisions to lifters, cam adjusters etc but they didn't seem to change anything around wear.
The only real upgrade is fitting black series lifters which have a low friction coating but are a lot more expensive than stock ones.

lifters and cam adjusters just a thing with these motors cam wear is improved with facelift but it can still happen other than that pretty bullet proof

If you really need new or upgraded parts contact M156 Camshaft Adjuster Phaser Portal | Fix your M156 Camshaft Adjusters (63motorsports.com)
They make stronger Cam adjuster plates and pins at around US$1000 for 4 base plates.
Mercedes will only sell you the whole cam adjuster at around US$1000 each.

I’ll be doing this soon actually since I’ll be replacing my pulleys.

But honestly just keep up with fluid service based on your driving habits, mileage and time and all will be fine.
