Emissions Quandary

All right, so I bought a C63 and have been going back and forth with the dealer I bought from for over a year.

Essentially, they bought the car at auction and it had things needed fixing, they hid all of it from me and the Mercedes Dealer I had pre-purchase inspect the vehicle and then dumped it on my doorstep. (ramifications/legal implications aside, I still have the car and want it/need to fix it.)

I've solved a few of the issues on my own so far but the remaining is below.

1. It wont pass emissions because of a what I believe to be a tuned ECU error because its flashing an O2 sensor error on the emissions report as well as some other codes but a euro-specialist shop and the Mercedes dealer here in town also came to the same conclusion on another occasion after visually inspecting the vehicle.

Also, the resonator was cut out and supremely lacking straight pipes put it just below walmart grade level worksmanship.

2. The caveat to all of this is I planned on doing a full exhaust anyway but the license plate acquisition for the vehicle has become obtuse for myself to say the least so I'm at a bit of an impasse as to the most effective way financially to achieve this. Its going to smash me regardless but I'd prefer the least smoosh option and it seems as though this forum may have quite a bit of knowledge to offer and I've searched but never quite found this exact pickle to be in.

Is the best option a stock reversion and then mods?

That's what seems apparent but would that require just an ECU replacement or an entire stock exhaust system? The only thing thats been removed and straight piped was the resonator...would this still cause an emissions fail? From what I have read I'm not inclined to think so...

Also, the car needs to have the upper oil pan gasket re-done. Figured I'd just get the motor mounts done and the starter replaced since I believe the motor needs to be lifted to replace the starter? Could be wrong on that as well considering the circumstances.

Regardless, any Rain-man like wisdom would be nice.

TL;DR- Guy bought car with shady mods that were hidden, cant pass emissions because shady tune, wants Catless LT's/Bolt on's at some point, needs a bit of work and license plates that say "NT-SMRT"

if your primary and secondary cats are still in place you most likely have a tuned ECU that has emissions bypassed. if you're still interested in a tune, we leave all emissions enabled on all of our tunes and since custom, our tunes are more accurate than the factory tune. We can overwrite any shotty tune.

PPI's don't scan the ECU for changes.

If i can fix this issue without replacing anything and just tuning this out that would be ideal.

IMO you should always start mods from a base as close as possible to stock. You just never know what’s going on otherwise.

I’d get said shady dealer to pay to have the car returned to stock. Get Mercedes to reflash your ECU to the newest version. Get a OEM resonator put back in, or better yet have them purchase the cat-back section and install. Most people prefer the sound anyway, and if it was hidden from you and represented as a stock car, why shouldn’t you have it. Who knows what else you/they will find once you really dig in.

Anyway, after that’s done you should call up Barry for a proper tune and go from there. Good luck.

I think Barry at 86 Tuned would be the first / best place to start and he can give you a base line to help you figure out what's really going on. In a perfect world, it might not be as bad as you think. Mystery tuners can wreck all kinds of havoc! And what BLKROKT said. ^

So Mercedes said they couldnt flash it because they were afraid of bricking it.

I'm currently going through the county prosecutor and small claims, it will take time of course so the idea that I'll more than likely end up in a "reimbursement" situation.

The dealer refused to even stand by a contracted 30 day warranty so the motives/actions sort of imply shadyness so I can't really rely on the person I bought it from to even acknowledge very little so I'm Han right now cause this **** be Solo.

Car had a bad intake cam and lifters when it was dropped off as well but has been replaced with a stock cam and BS lifters so that should be okay.

I'll talk to Mr. Manilow and see what can be done/worked out since I'm thinking we probably have some distance tween us.
