Keyless go locked me out

I had been swimming at a friend's house... My keys were in my regular shorts in a bag...
At night I opened the car door, threw my bag in and closed the door .... I don't remember locking it in anyway
Regardless.... Usually the doors won't lock if the key is inside. I know for sure you can't close the trunk if the key is in there.
Somehow the car locked... Thankfully through the open roof I was able to use a long rod and grab the handle and open the door.. of course the alarm sounded as well....but that was an easy fix
I recently have replaced the battery in my fob so I don't think that the battery is dead.
What would cause my car to lock and how do I avoid this in the future.
(Ya ya I know get an extra key)

I know the car can autolock if you don't open the door after unlocking or if the car is locked and you open the trunk, it will lock once closed.
It probably just didn't recognize the key was in the car or couldn't read the signal.

The "concierge" always gives the same instructions every time for these reasons.
"Place the key directly behind the steering wheel on the dash, exit the car and leave the door ajar so you don't lock your keys in the car."
The new Mercedes have this issue.
If you'd like to avoid this you could buy one from the 80's or just not make the same mistake again in the future.
**** happens but unfortunately this is an issue you can't really avoid outside of just not doing it again.

My regular shorts were in my duffel bag.
I got ready to leave I put my duffel bag in the car as I grab the door handle it unlocked put the bag in walked away just to go back and get something else by the time I came back the doors were closed and locked
It's not like this is a regular thing
My point is that the doors don't typically lock when the keys inside

Rather than suggest I buy a car from the '80s, maybe, just maybe, we can make the key smarter and the transponders better
