Valve Cover Leak or just the VC Gasket???

Hey Guys,

Still pretty new to this platform, but am feeling very good about what I need to replace in the next few years! Car has 85k miles now and definitely leaks some oil. Dealership said I need two new Valve Covers along with the VC Gaskets. Is there any way to check if it's just the gaskets and not the covers as well? With this mileage is it pretty normal for the actual Valve Covers to be leaking?

Thank you! (Just trying to not get ripped by the Dealership).
Sam

The drivers side one cracks more often it seems, you have to take it off and clean and inspect and flex a bit to find any cracks, tends to crack at the rear lower corner on the top side. I replaced the gasket then took it off again and find the crack finally. At 300 each I would verify it is cracked before just replacing as gaskets leaking is common cracked valve cover less common but still pretty common. I think dealer just doesn’t want to change you coming back and can guarantee they fix the leak if they just replace them.

Damn, I'm not mechanically inclined enough to take them off to see if there are any cracks..

While I am in there though, is there anything else I should do as preventative maintenance such as injectors, PCV valve, or anything since we are in there already?

Thanks for the reply!

Plugs, injectors, ignition coils, pcv valve, and intake manifold gaskets would be good to do while you are at it. They are all coming up if they haven't been done yet. Have the cam lobes inspected for wear since the covers will be off.

I’ve heard of the Throttle Body Plate going bad because of the magnesium material.. would you recommend replacing the TB plate too since the intake manifold gaskets would be getting replaced?

It is a bit of a depends, while you are in there isn't going to have any cost savings or benefits to things like the intake manifold pcv etc.

While you are doing the valve covers, plugs and coils could be done although no real reason to do coils unless they fail IMO, they last well unlike say BMW coils. Plugs dealer charges a fortune for and are easy to do yourself even not being very mechanically inclined. Definitely have the cams and lifters inspected for wear when the covers are off.

If you are going to tackle things around the intake manifold that is all worth doing at the same time, PCV needs the intake off to do, so do PCV intake manifold gaskets and inspect and or replace throttle body plate if needed. Injectors are a bit easier when you are doing the throttle body but also they are very easy to do stand alone as only the air boxes are in the way and if nothing else I would do the injectors at your mileage as they are known to fail and can cause a cylinder to flood with fuel and damage the engine.

One thing of note, if the dealer does it they will charge big money and order the AMG branded injectors but the bosch equivalents (bosch makes the amg branded ones) are only about 30-40- bucks each so get those and have an indy do them.

Awesome for the detailed response! Do you have an instagram or social media? Do you still have your C63? Is that BS mean you have the BLACK SERIES?!?!?!
