ATTENTION: First Gen AFE Pro Dry S Filter Users. Check Your Filters!
Coupled them with ROW airboxes (Back then they were only $350!!!)
in 2015 I got a Renntech carbon airbox and when I installed it I noticed the filter's surrounds were starting to crack (It wasn't bad)
I totally forgot about it... Fast forward to now... I just did a bunch of DIY stuff on the car and the airbox had to be removed.
I thought to myself this is a good time to clean them up.... As soon as I pulled the filters out, the surrounds started to crumble. Nothing was sucked into the engine. Thank god!
It was all intact.... Till I touched them
FYI: I never cleaned them with any chemicals only dish soap (Dawn) and warm water
Air dried not in the sun
Pic of the old ones
One side was much worse than the other (One completely falling apart the other still trying to hold itself together hahaha)
Pic of the New
Pic of Old Vs New
The old design had more filter pleats (33 old vs 30 new) equaling more surface area
I think made the surround thicker to be more robust and probably changed the formula for it.
Anyhow just wanted to give anyone with the first gen AFE Pro Dry S filters a heads up!

I've been using those Pro Dry filters on a few platforms for many years. Never encountered anything like in the OP's photos.
Cleaned every 10K miles at most and only used the aFe cleaning kit, so I can't speak to any other products.
