AC compressor noise

I think I have a bad bearing type noise in the AC compressor. It's my sons car so trying to get ahead of the eight ball here. Has anyone replaced the pulley assembly with out removing the pump or does it need to come out ?
Thanks

Better off paying a mechanic to do this job. This is not a DIY job and is not easy. You will need to lower the subfram or raise the engine up.

You can remove the clutch and pulley without removing the a/c compressor or degassing and regassing but it's a very tight fit in the engine bay. Additionally, it's hard finding a supplier that's willing to sell just one clutch and pulley assembly, a lot of them only sell to wholesalers or businesses. You can have a mechanic or shop degas the system, and then you can remove the compressor on your own and bring it to a repair shop that specializes in a/c compressors and have the bearings and clutch changed - however the total cost of labor and time to do all that would certainly be greater than just buying a known good compressor with a clutch and pulley attached from FCP Euro / Pelican Parts with a lifetime warranty - not to mention a common failure point is the variable displacement solenoid in the compressor itself which also requires the a/c system to be degassed and regassed to replace. It would literally be less effort to just replace the compressor unless you get your labour and time for free.

I have done this on my m273 engine a long time ago. It saved me a ton of money because I went and got a junkyard compressor for like 40 bucks and just removed the bearing/pulley. It actually was not that hard... i'm not sure on the w204 of the location but on the m273 it was on the bottom driver side so I jacked the car up, removed the under panel and was able to remove it from underneath. The hardest part was probably the removal and reattachment of the c clip that retains it. I had to purchase special angled pliers to access it but also a worthwhile investment. Once I changed that I drove for many more miles over many more years without issue.
