The pics are from my 2010 W204 headlamps I replaced a few months ago. Surveying the cause, it's easy to see the eyelid bulbs overheated and melted the internal socket/housing. On both headlamps, the inboard ones burned out first. Looking closely, you can see the same problem was progressing on the outboard eyelids. The silver ring is the burned out socket mount, making buying the whole headlamp as a unit necessary to fix the problem.
I'm looking for any suggestions on a just-as-bright, but cooler option that will fit the OEM sockets, so the same issue doesn't impact the new headlamps and have to buy the whole unit all over again. Has anyone else encountered this issue and/or replaced the eyelids with a suitable bulb? Does an LED option exist? The label is from the driver's side headlamp, just for reference.
If you are a bit crafty can you cut the wire on both and attach a new LED bulb holder and bulb?
likely can just carefully remove the bulb holder from the silver "socket" and glue the silver socket back on. shouldn't be too hard since he has the headlights out. I suspect the same issue will happen in the future if you stick another bulb in there, though. I'd just leave them empty and run a resistor.
