Whining noise once warmed up - any ideas?

My car is making a whining noise, but it’s not there when I start the car. It only starts once warmed up. And then after a while it goes away. Have a listen with headphones - it’s dependant on the revs. Any ideas?

Ah, the classic mystery whine! My money’s on a belt or pulley. Mine used to whine like that before I had to replace the alternator. Keep an eye (or ear) on it, those noises have a habit of turning into breakdowns at the worst times.

Take the serpentine belt off. Just make sure how to route it back again.
Then spin all the pulleys by hand. If you hear a noise, thats the one.
Depending on how old your car is, its probably not a bad idea to just replace at least the belt and the idler pulleys.

I assume the 5 speed transmission on that could also be going bad. I hope not, but I have had the same symptoms before.

If the other suggestions don't yield a result, try listening to the PCV system that might be malfunctioning. There are centrifugal weight that creates a vacuum on the back side of one cylinder head usually the left one. They do fail and cause a while when they do. Easy changeout that should be done as a service item but typically isn't.

I have been chasing the same thing with the mystery whine. Leaning towards a ac bearing or power steering, but it is not typical of a bearing sound, it's higher pitched.
Did you guys ever notice a whine coming from the oil filter housing?? Thats a strange one for sure. Sounds like my E55 oil pump whine they are known for.

Thanks for the suggestions. This guy had the same symptoms and managed to fix the problem.

It seems our power steering fluid reservoir has a filter which you can’t change – you have to replace the whole reservoir. This seems the most likely scenario - a clogged filter. I’ve got a service coming up so will get a quote on doing replacing it.

I wonder if there is a way of unclogging.

Correct, I did the one on my ML63 (M156). We did 3 power steering flushes and the fluid would not come clean at all. Once we changed the reservoir and did one last flush, it was a night & day difference. The reservoir isn’t expensive so kind of a no brainer to change out if it’s 10+ years old.

I was leaning towards that but the sound is consistent cold or hot and does not change with turning the wheel which you would think it would change like most do.
Already changed all the pulleys as well.
Sorry about hijacking the thread but thought this post was in the same catagory.

I changed my reservoir/fluid and still have the whine so I'm thinking it's pulley but haven't tested yet

I'm going with AC compressor bearing at this point.

Did it and they where all smooth even before I replaced all the pulleys. Sucks that the AC and power steering are the more difficult units to replace but what ever.

It's pretty normal for these power steering pumps to fail, they dont love living at 7000rpm and not a great cooler capacity. Combine that with drifting or road racing and you'll kill 3 in 60-70k miles.

For sure but I never heard a power steering pump bearing actually go. It's always the pump itself internally with that crazy whine when turning the wheel.

I doubt it's the filter in the power steering reservoir. See this post that shows how small and fragile it is.

Thanks for everybody’s input. Turns out, in my case it WAS the power steering reservoir, and I’m assuming because of the filter. Got the dealer to put in a new one and the whining has gone.
