Question M156 intake camshaft "skip" and weird phaser behavior

Hi all,

I just installed new intake camshafts on my M156 and after starting it up I got a P0011 (Bank 1 Intake camshaft position deviates from specified value).

I redid the timing on Bank 1 only but not successful, code P0011 still there and engine seems less happy than before.

So, today I reopened everything to do the timing on both banks at the same time and saw that my Bank 1 intake camshaft is acting weirdly when I'm cranking the engine.

You can see the phaser momentarily desynchronize from the adjuster at seconds 0:09 to 0:13 and the whole cam "skipping" at 1:46ish. All other cams are not behaving like that.

I never opened the adjusters when changing the cams and would prefer not to because they don't rattle at cold start.

Any help, tips or diagnostic is welcome.

Happy cold Saturday!
Jerome

Did you remove the old friction washer and replace it with a new washer? Did you replace the phaser bolts with new ones or did you reuse hardware?

Yes, fresh hardware. I bought new washers and bolts again for the retiming I'm planning to do.

It was my first guess also that the bolt wasn't tight enough but I checked the torque and it's at ~115nm which seems normal for these bolts.

***Well, I watched this video series from Tasos while drinking my coffee this morning and I think he answered my question at 28:00 timestamp of this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3M2ILteRHHA***
Looks like him opening the adjuster this morning.

What happened? That skip isnt good. You said timing was good. Nice video to show. I hope you had the diamond washers in the right way, cam shaft bolts tightened right right torque...but even that wont cuase the skip on slow turn. So what happened?

I think it's the locking pin in the phaser that is slipping.

I opened the defaulting phaser and this is the condition of the backplate hole:

Honestly it doesn't look that bad compared to what I've seen on multiple YT videos. I think the phaser is slipping more than it will in reality because the phaser is empty of oil, so zero internal resistance.

I did flipped the locking pin, stretched the spring, fill them with oil and closed back both intake phasers. Planning to reinstall them next weekend.

Will keep you posted!

Cheers
Jerome

Just realized I'm saying "phaser" in my post above but wanted to say "adjuster" instead.

Any updates on this? Im getting ready to do this on my M278 GL450 and suspect something similar. Did it end up being a bad phaser?

Hey! Honestly, I only flipped the pin and stretched the spring. It was still skipping a bit when cranking by hand but never had timing or rattling issue with the phaser since. I think once the phasers are filled with oil it helps preventing the skipping.
