How important is engine/exhaust sound to you?

I am very frustrated with these next generation cars coming from BMW, Audi and Benz. I loved how i could buy a German make that had more muscle than most mustangs on the road. (C63 AMG)

now with all this downsizing and adding turbos, these new engines may have the power. But the sound is starting to lack. the M4 sounds like a Honda to me. I am hoping this new 4.0L v8 will have enough growl. BMW and Audi are a loss cause.

its like the only cars these days that can give you real engine sound is either a exotic or corvette/ other muscle cars. I am not really a corvette type of person either.

what are your thoughts ?

I can guaranty for you most of us bought the C63 because of its roaring lion hidden inside it "the sound." So I am guessing that the exhaust sound of the C63's 6.2L engine is pretty important for all of us. However, stop worrying about the new w205 AMG. Even if the sound of its exhaust was a little bit less that the present one, you still can improve it by adding and decating some pipes. By the end, C63 W204 is always going to be unique and the w205 just a modern vision of the new smaller engines cars.

AMG and Mercedes both know that the sound of the W204 C63 is important to most of its owners and I don't think they are going to screw it up in the next version.

Hugely important to me and I think everyone here. That was the hook that made getting the C63 a necessity!

Turbos kill sound. That's just a reality.

However, unlike the F80 M3, which received an inline six and turbos, at least the C63 will be retaining the V8, which inherently has a throatier, more aggressive (i.e., less raspy) sound.

Haven't heard the new TT 5.5 but from reviews it seems that AMG has kept it sounding quite aggressive, whilst BMW's new M cars' TT V8 need electronic noises piped in to keep their owners happy.

Both AMG and BMW M know that sound is very important to buyers. However, while AMG decided to keep as much as the sound as possible by spending time engineering and tuning the car, BMW M decided not to put any effort into it and just pump fake sounds through the speakers.

I would buy an M5/M6 but there is no way in hell I will buy the M3 when it sounds worse than a 4 banger CLA45.

I agree, same here! That's why I just jumped on a 507 myself. Sound and the NA 6.2 V8 is just something we won't really see in the future.

Merc clearly never listen to us begging for wider rears
I honestly think Merc will do a good job with the W205, but it would be stupid to compare the sound to the 6.2

Its funny how now that engines have turbos, they received a handicap when comparing. rather sad todays cars. cant hang with the out going models in something as simple as sound.

Ditto what everyone has said thus far, random-thoughts style:

Many of us have 'it'.
The loud & nasty the M156, that is.
We love it - the sound.
We will always want it.
They know it.
So they haven't / won't mess it up.
What about the current 5.5. TT AMGS?
Actually still sounds pretty nice.
Ever heard an Audi S8?
Well if Audi Quattro tuners can do it?
Hah!
AMG surely can. And will.
But yes, the comparo is unwise, arguably stupid.
M156 is likely gone forever.
Hey, check out this RennTech CLS
I know, not quite stock.
But not far off; I've heard 'em.
And you know how Harmut and his RennTech technicians & tuners are.
Two steps from the looney bin.
Too much power is never enough.
Hey, he said it.
But I digress...back to the current stock AMG V8 sounds.
Can you live with it?
I can.
And we'll take the wider rears, too.

Cars.
As long as it doesn't sound like a lawn mower(Looking at you, BMW) then we're good.

I love the way the C63 sounds and having a chance to own an M156 before they are gone was all the reason I needed to buy one. Adding headers make the car sound perfect, I'm current traveling on the Hot Rod Magazine Power Tour and I can't tell you how much attention this car has gotten just because of the way it sounds. That said I want AWD so am going with a '15 E63S and it is a bit of a disappointment knowing that it will never come close to sounding like a C63 with headers.

Exactly how I feel! New M3/4 is a huge turnoff.

Personally I love the sound of the m157, It's a good balance between muscle car and sophistication. Without being too raspy or loud.

The M156 was never in the W218. The videos he posted are of the M157 like he said.

That's a good point, in that - absent the M156 to compare it to, it sounds fine. What I mean to do is pose these questions:

1. If we didn't know it had exhaust-sound-sucking turbos attached, the M157 that is, would we even be able to tell?

2. Better still, would we be dissatisfied with the V8 sound?

Well, not to my ears.

And even though I get to hear the M156 every day, the M157 still doesn't sound too bad, and I give credit to AMG for even getting the sound to where they have. They got it right............without pumping it into the cabin with speakers. (Are you reading this BMW?)

I guess the real question is how different will the 5.5L. its a decently larger motor. the 4.0L will only sound worse right?

It varies.
Autocar magazine said the AMG GT has kept the same exhaust growl that we are used to.

Take a listen to the E63 AMG. The growl is there. MB won't ruin their signature growl.

IDK why you guys keep referring to the 5.5 V8. Sure its got turbos, but its also a much larger engine. So if anything the C63 WILL sound worse.

Plus exhausts is what feeds the turbo with a already small V8. I have doubts lets hope i am wrong. should still be much better than a M4 though.

I think we have nothing to worry about!

I hope AWD will be available in europe… we really need it in Switzerland!
