M177/M178 Engine No Longer Exclusive?
As a potential C63S customer, one thing that always drew towards AMG models was of course the engine and the 'One man, one engine' philosophy. We can debate how truth there is in that these days, but it's always been the key marketing message for AMG.
This week the 2016 G-Class was released and the G550/G500 is getting the same M177 engine as the C63. Are we going to see MB start using this engine in more and more non-AMG vehicles? Even if it's the same engine and it's mass produced vs. assembled by hand, it takes a lot of the allure away from AMG models knowing you can get the same engine in an oversized soccer mom vehicle...
I feel like M3/M4 fans were already a bit unhappy that their S55 engine is a derivative of the ubiquitous N55, are MB fans going to be upset that a slightly detuned M177 could potentially be used across many of the non-AMG models?

I don't see it as an issue, this has been an AMG thing for quite a while. The M113 engines of the 55 AMG's were reworked (and in some applications supercharged) versions of the same engine used in regular models. Same for the SLR's M155 engine. The current M157 (and naturally aspirated M152) are reworked versions of the regular M278 engine. The M156/M159 on the other hand were AMG through and through.
None of that makes one engine better than the other, and in my opinion does not take away from the complete package that makes an AMG an AMG

I don't see it as a bad thing. The G class isn't a cheap car. Its supposed to be the engine in the upcoming AMG models so i don't see it being in like a e550 or anything.

The S157 and M157 are essentially very similar engines. Those are shared among the rest of the V8 lines at MB. When those engines are put into AMG cars; they always use AMG upgraded components.
