I'd have thought it's more dropping the capacity hugely and adding turbos what's improved the fuel economy so much. Other than the possible lag which isn't really a problem in a modern engine or the noise which Merc have solved there's not really much of a downside to them. More power, more torque, less fuel.

Hence the death of the NA engine in most cars.

By roads I guess you mean city driving? That seems fair. All the stop and go always brings the economy down a lot.

The low end torque this engine makes is really impressive, I really never have to rev the car over 1750 rpm. It makes enough power down low to get me moving safely while using very little fuel.

Indeed. Keeping below 1,750rpm is impressive.

I can see why you've the best mpg of this forum so far. I don't think anyone else will beat that so we might as well crown you the Eco King now

Maybe now we need to see who can get it the lowest? Lol

I get that. Just sometimes the traffic doesn't allow that or you wish to keep your drivers license as well

Was more just curious to see if the car can be as efficient as Merc claims if you drive it easy. I know given a chance I'll be doing anything but however I have some dull roads to travel sometimes so when your not having fun it's nice to have a higher mpg.

MPG should get a lil better after the engine has a few thousand miles on it no matter how you drive it. Taking a long road trip also will aide your MPG.

Yep, and we have the savings from the non-existing gas guzzler tax to prove it.

BTW, here is MB technical discussion on the topic:

"Convenient fuel savings – Sailing

In transmission mode "C" (Comfort), the transmission aims to keep the engine speed as low as possible and engage the most economical gear in all driving situations. When starting off in "C", the transmission always uses second gear and shifts to higher gears as early as possible if the driving style allows.

For example, sixth gear is often engaged during urban driving – this not only lowers consumption, but also noise development. However, Comfort also means smooth gear changes and a "soft" accelerator pedal characteristic to ensure gentle driving characteristics.

The "Sailing" function is now also available for the first time on an AMG vehicle in transmission mode "C". This causes the engine to be decoupled from the drivetrain, e.g. on extended downhill stretches, so that the vehicle then coasts with the engine at idle speed. This effectively reduces fuel consumption."

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the sailing function only applies at 45mph and above

Yes, love seeing that sailboat icon in comfort mode.
Today's driving for me though has been in sport mode. In town driving with some revving and dashing off at green lights yielded average 14l/100km.

Still around 14l/100km after 6 weeks or so, mixing Comfort and Sport and mainly in urban traffic light settings(60-70km/hr) and some short distance highway 120km/hr drives.

The 8.4l/100km combined claim outside Canada is so... misleading. Canadian 11.2/l/100km is closer but still not realisitic no matter how light footed I was!

The best I had ever noticed(for a couple of minutes) on highway was 9.5l/100km or so but short lived!

that sucks! i was really hoping the claims were close if not accurate lol... this is way off

i know buying a v8 we shouldnt care too much about the gas, but still it's nice to save where we can and just in general less trips to the gas station as it is a hassle.

im assuming you are still in break in period? perhaps it will get a little better after? and are you flooring it with those averages?

Personally, I think a combined 18 mpg on a V8 with mixed driving is really good.

This week I have been driving in stickily comfort mode. I have seen an increase in a tank of fuel. I fueled last Wednesday and are just slightly under a 1/2 of tank of fuel.
