I just hate when a programmable feature is imposed and can't be tunes to suit the owner.

Without feedback through a forum like this how would MB know how people feel. Telling the dealer does not necessarily get passed on. I owned the W204 C63 and did not expect this single irritant, specially when it almost cost me an incident.
You've got zero chance of European cars removing this feature. Outside of the fuel savings the other reason this exists is to cut down on large city pollution. There's lots of huge cities where traffic flow in rush hour is horrible and having cars sat still with their engines running doesn't help the air quality.

Some cars are even going to be banned from driving into cities if they don't meet certain European standards. Diesels are getting hit the most but older petrols also will fall into the same trap.

Expect this feature in more cars as time passes. The future EPA standards require the car manufacturers to try to find every lil bit to make to cars more fuel efficient. Having it as a default might upset some people in certain warranted cases but don't expect it to change. I'm sure somebody will come up with a solution to have it coded.

Well, I'm in Canada. No North American built cars that I know of have this feature.

As I mentioned earlier in my son's BMW M3, this is only actuated by the driver and remains in effect on or off permanently till the driver again changes it. Wish I had that option.

Canadian rules are probably different and MB builds accordingly.
I wonder if a new M3 sold by a dealer in the US would allow you to turn it off like yours?

US BMWs are the same as Canadian in this way.

Mercedes just added this feature this year.
