engine differences

What are the internal engine differences between a 177 and 178? Does the 177 have a forged crankshaft?

The 178 has dry sump lubrication, allowing it to sit lower in the engine bay.

They are exactly the same internal hardware, engine block and heads wise.

The engine internals consist mostly of forged hardware, pistons and rods as well as the crankshaft - the piston assemblies are the same as used in the M133 (ie. AMG A & CLA 45's)

The differences are as already mentioned the dry oil sump system, air intake feed systems and outer exhaust peripherals.

Is most the of the power difference due to software changes?

The C63s has more Tq than GTS and same HP
GTS is lighter.

The power/torque output and curve is absolutely governed by ECU programing yes :)

There'll also be torque output governing and/or control by the TCU ie. the transmission ecu especially in the case of the AMG GT to control maximum torque "through flow".
