Gliding mode

I saw a new symbol in dashboard - sailing boat - replacing temporarily the drive-program symbol.

I had C-mode selected together with start/stop on.

In downhill it went to "glide mode" with the sailing-boat symbol.

Yep, it essentially places the transmission in neutral and lets the car coast.

If you have a HUD the gear indicator will also disappear when in occurs.

It only happens in a certain speed window, but I forget what the lower and upper limits are.

"Sailing" is the technical name for it. It will only work in Comfort mode. The engine and transmission decuple and allow you to coast. However, the minute the brake/gas is applied it will go right back to normal. Your RPM will also drop to idle since nothing is engaged. It will NOT work when cruise control activated.

Can you disable this sailing mode rubbish? (apart from not using comfort mode). When I'm in the car and moving, the car will be in a gear period. No neutral, gliding stupidity. Is there a setting in the instrument cluster? The ECO button is bad enough, let alone this. I'll leave sailing for boats.

Short answer is NO

But it is pretty easy to set up Individual setting like you want and after a start you just push dynamic control one push forward and your done.

Um, there is also a button on the center console to turn it off.

I just sold my 991S mainly because I hated this "feature" which is supposed to save fuel.

I think the manufacturers have to show unrealistic fuel economy across their models for various markets and these features are forced to be on at the start for that reason.

Yes - that is correct. I was also told since MB took on the smart car line, it's made it so the fuel economy is averaged across the line. This has made it so there is no gas guzzler tax on most of the AMG models. I agree - it is annoying and unnerving as hell with the engine stopping and starting like that.

I actually love it. If my wife is in the car and I'm "behaving" why not get the best gas mileage possible. When she's not in the car, I'm in S+ and never engage sail mode.

I like the feature...and turn it off when I don't want to use it.

If you all turn off the eco. engine off/on button, that will kill the sailing mode. The feature is both of my car, C43 cabriolet and a GLC 63. I generally run in sport mode, which keeps the sailing/gliding mode from kicking in.

We had this on the C43 but it is only on when you put the car on ECO mode. I used to use it while cruising initially when I got the car. Later I was a bit concerned about the added wear and tear you get with the clutch engaging and disengaging again and again, so I stopped using it within a month of getting the car.

Well, actually the 9g-Tronic has several multi disc clutches inside. Those could show more wear - but I highly doubt that...

Well of course that is not what is being discussed here. All auto transmissions have several clutch packs internally but this is about whether it has a fluid coupling (C43) or a multi-plate clutch pack in its place.(C63)

My answer was a direct reply to the statment "This is no clutch on C43" - which is wrong.

As far as I understand the gliding mode, the clutches in the 9g-tronic are released / engaged - therefore it is not a question of the torque converter, but the gearbox, isn't it? At least it is done like that in the ZF 8h (Audi, BMW and so on). So actually one has to discuss, if gliding mode does increase wear on the transmission or not.

On early 7g-TronicPlus cars gliding mode was only available with the "MCT" ZF wet clutch (as the torque converter replacement) - i.e. hybrid cars. On later 7g-TronicPlus and 9g-Tronic cars (w205!), gliding was also available with torque converter and I doubt, that it is done via the converter.

it was done by directing the power level in the torque converter pump

Turn ECO start/stop off on the center console. That disables the sail mode.

The ONLY time I run in Comfort is when I’m cruising on the highway. In that environment, who cares if you glide and save a few cents on fuel? Even then, if the cruise is set, it won’t glide.

With the new ECU software update, there is no more sailing mode. On comfort mode my car used to show the sailboat icon and now it never comes up anymore.
