I am seriously considering wrapping my car. I have never had this done before. From those of you that have, what are the biggest things to understand? how is washing and detailing different? Is the car more susceptible to stains, rips, fading etc.

Washing so far has been ridiculously easy. Nothing so far sticks to Xpel that won't come off with just water and a microfiber cloth. Take that, tree sap and bird crap!
No waxing either.
Self healing PPF (paint protection film) is typically thicker than the colored vinyl wraps that you'd use to change colors. More expensive, and more annoying to install (wet vs. dry). But once on, it basically adds a pretty awesome layer of protection.

I was quoted around $6-7k CAD for it here. IMO not worth it at all for me. Id rather have my front bumper repainted every year if the need be and it would still be cheaper. Full wrap would prob only make sense if youre planning on keeping the car for a really long time.

. He is going to re-do by removing the bumper and headlights so he can tuck the wrap inside the headlight hollow so it does not separate again and no visable wrap cut line will be noticable.
. I also noticed that wearing polarized sunglasses in sunlight days the wrap has appearances of blemishes and distortions . It bugged me but see on XPEL site FAQ (last question) this happens. If I had known this I don't think I would have had a it done. I live in NYC area so glad I have it on now.
. Hope this might help anyone with the same issue or someone thinking of getting it done.
